Basically, I will be playing media in Plex Desktop app on Windows 11 and at some point the controls will be gone. No keyboard shortcut works to start/stop playback. I have to kill the app. When I open Plex again it will have the media in the lower right corner to resume and it will resume from a point that is before I killed the app. Presumably that is the point at which Plex had the issue.
No events in the Event Log that correlate to the Plex app issue. The Plex.log file does not show the error or anything specific that I think might be the error, but I am happy to post the log after I scrub it, if needed.
I have uninstalled Plex Desktop twice and even deleted everything in AppData and Registry just to be sure. It is still happening. Only started a few weeks ago for me. Anyone know why this is happening or how to fix it?
This is not driver / OS based, as far as I can tell, because it occurs on:
Brave browser:
Brave 1.89.137 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Chromium: 147.0.7727.102
And it happens in Chrome:
Version 147.0.7727.102 (Official Build) (64-bit)
But it is NOT happening in Vivaldi:
7.9.3970.55 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Chromium Version
146.0.7680.203
Thus, I feel it has to be something that happened between 146.0.7680.203 and 147.0.7727.102.
And/or a Plex update that happened in roughly the same time. I suspect that they patched something in that version of chromium that isn’t being processed right by Plex. (Or google screwed something up; always possible.)
That said, does the app use Electron? I didn’t think that it did, but if it does use Electron, then they app and browser crashes could be related. I have seen an increase in Discord app crashes too on Windows and I know it uses Electron. I am just wondering if there is some correlation for it.
Hm, that card should be already a few years old, right?
Have you checked it for dust & fluff buildup on the fans and cooling fins?
Same applies to all other coolers & fans in this PC.
Open the nVidia control panel (either by right-click on the desktop background, or from the windows task tray area).
3D settings → manage 3D settings → App specific settings
add Plex HTPC.exe to the list of apps.
Now scroll down to “Power Management” and select “Maximum Performance”.
The aim is to prevent the HMDI port from ever getting powered down while Plex HTPC or Plex for Desktop is running.
It can’t hurt to control proper seating of the HDMI plug on both ends of the cable. Maybe experiment with a different HDMI cable, if you have one available.
I am a bit confused with your reply about HDMI port being powered down. I don’t lose video at all. Not in Windows or in the Plex App. The video and audio are still playing. What is gone is my ability to control Plex. I can’t stop the video or even see the controls and time bar. But at no time does video cut out.
I think the issue was not Plex, but an issue with Intel 12th/13th generation processors and the BIOS version. I have updated the BIOS version and things seem to have stabilized. I am still testing that though. I will update once I know for sure.
I can confirm it was the processor issue and that updating the BIOS fixed it. Strange it only manifested recently. I tracked it down because I was having random Brave/Chrome crashes with an error message of STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION. That led me to the processor issue.
Anyway, closing this issue. Glad it wasn’t the Plex client.
