Video files missing MetaData

I have several dozen .mp4 movie files that report NO Metadata. I don’t mean they don’t contain titles and actors and such, I mean the ,mp4 file doesn’t even list a resolution as you can see below in the screen cap.

Even without any MetaData the files play fine in both VLC and Plex. Is there ANY way to correct these files? technically I know it’s not a Plex problem, I’m just looking for some help to correct these files.

BTW, none of the Tag Editors I’ve tried offer to edit the resolution and none of the Video editing software I’ve tried will open a file without at least SOME MetaData (I’m guessing the MetaData for resolution)

I suppose this is because Windows is mixing file information and actual metadata.

  • File information, e.g. media characteristics such as resolution, bitrate, codecs, layout…, are information derived from the content
  • Meta data is information added to the file header – in case of video files it’s information stored in the container

I suppose your files have some flavors of video/audio streams that Windows cannot deal with natively. You could use an app like MediaInfo to show those characteristics.

Side note… keep in mind that title tags in your file in combination with a highly prioritized Local Media Asset agent can result in hiccups when it comes to matching your files in Plex.

MediaInfo 19.09 is one of those programs that also shows nothing. Here’s the XML readout from MediaInfo using the same file above

As you can see, no real info about the file is included. Plex PLAYS it just fine and Plex grabbed the right info from IMDB, but Plex can’t assign it any resolution because there is no info in the file to grab.

So does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Have you tried to use the Analyze function in Plex (manually) on the troublesome files?

Then remux this file.
Who knows what horrors lurk inside which lead to the file not getting streamed correctly…

Throw it into MKVtoolnixGUI
or use http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/ if you’re so inclined.

I tried Analyze on several files. It did nothing. I didn’t really expect it to. Since the files themselves are missing the Metadata I didn’t expect Plex to conjure some up. Using the same file as above, here is what Plex reports, even after using Analyze.

Another possibility could be that the file is not really a mp4 container but something else.
