Video keeps buffering--new issue on a long playing machine

Server Version#: Version 1.17.0.1841
Player Version#: Chrome on Windows 8.1

After the last update, my PC started having issues streaming any video for long…even 720p videos. I set the quality very low (even though I was able to stream 1080 before) and I can see the buffer bar…is eventually reached on any movie then the video starts spinning. It starts playing again…then spinning…even on small videos that I used to watch previously.

I tried rolling the update back…no help there, so went ahead and reapplied it. I can see my CPU isn’t close to being pushed and again…these are videos that I used to watch with zero issue. Tried total reboot of course, no luck.

I can supply whatever log files that are needed—but when I went to troubleshoot there are quite a few logs, some the same name with different numbers and I have no idea which one actually tells me anything.

Hey sorry to hear about the buffering. As far as the logs go, when you hit the Settings - Troubleshooting - Download Logs button, you just zip up the folder it gives you and attach it with your next reply. It’s hard to say which file the fault will be found in.

What I like to do is reboot the PMS hardware, then give it 6 min to initialize everything, then I’ll use my Plex Player to demonstrate the problem, wait 30sec, then Download Logs.

When I look in that log folder, I’ll see a number of files written with the timestamp since the last reboot. Those are the only ones we really need, as they were the only logs touched during the issue demonstration.

Good luck sir.

Plex Media Server Logs_2019-10-12_00-28-00.zip (4.9 MB)

Ok uploaded the file. Look at the Plex Media Server log file when it starts @ 10/12/19, that’s the only errors I saw clicking around.

Oct 12, 2019 00:27:26.607 [8228] DEBUG - Failed to stream media, client probably disconnected after 524288 bytes: 10053 - An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine

This was my computer playing the media on my media server (on the same machine).

Running Windows 8.1 Pro
Core i5 @ 3.4 ghz 3.40 Ghz
16 GB Ram

Never had an issue before with this PC pushing any media…other than 4k HD media. The video I was streaming was a 1080p HI 2.7 Mbps video with a 3 hour run length, which I’ve watched before with no issue.

Okay I’ll have a look at the logs. Thanks for giving me the time frame. While that’s going on, I’m finding and reading more often about Windows problems being found with sfc

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system

Would you run it and scan for any issues please?
Thanks

Can we see the windows output of ipconfig /all
I’m seeing network issues possible in the logs with your netmask.
And could you tell us what the device at this address is?

It looks like you’re consistently getting An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host over and over while playing. Those are followed by the data arriving after that when it says Completed after connection close

Here are the first two of many.

Windows System Check was fine.

I’ve included the IP Config output and Computer IP Details as screenshots–see attached.

Thanks for your help!IP%20Config Computer%20IP%20Details

SFC was clean, that’s good news. The screenshots are also very good.
What was this address? 192.168.1.24

I can see from your ipconfig that you have something called ExpressVPN.
I’m guessing it’s causing problems, either it or the above IP address.

Plex website articles talk about solving problems by completely uninstalling any VPN.
If you are able to get things working smoothly without the VPN, you’ll then have a new goal, trying to get them to coexist if it’s a must.

So my suggestions would be

  • Determine if 192.168.1.24 can be adjusted or ignored or it’s communications disabled.
  • If you do get it quiet (or just unplug it for testing), try your film again.
  • Completely uninstall the VPN. You can search the plex articles to see their suggestion.
  • Reboot the machine and test again.

Let us know what you do and log things if it still stutters.

Ok I did uninstall Express VPN (although I’ve had that with Plex for quite some time with no issues) and I still get this error in my logs;

Failed to stream media, client probably disconnected after 0 bytes: 10053 - An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine

When I googled that, I found this topic;

I didn’t have anything in my allowed networks but went ahead and added this;

192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0

I have a ‘ok’ internet connection and would rather not have to use the internet to stream local files (not sure why Plex insists on this security, it’s rather strange). Anyways, I’m giving this a go–any thoughts?

That’s perfectly okay to use, and you wrote it correctly.
Restart PMS and after some time test again and get fresh logs.
My own system was not affected by Allowed Networks to any noticeable degree.

Issue returned, same streaming error–see attached log

Plex Media Server.log (5.4 MB)

Your logs are still filled with this error every 30sec. Because it involves your network, I can guess that its snowballing to other aspects that are network sensitive, like streaming.

Oct 21, 2019 14:34:28.370 [6068] ERROR - SSDP: Error parsing device schema for http://192.168.1.24:49152/upnpdevicedesc.xml

You didn’t comment on this:

Can you tell us what’s the story with that device?

Ok I pulled up my Unifi system and blocked it, testing what device it was–it’s my doorbell security camera.

So the logs show:
SSDP: Error parsing device schema for http://192.168.1.24:49152/upnpdevicedesc.xml

From Google, it appears Plex has had this issue in the past:

I have no way to turn off discovery on that camera.

However, I’m still getting all of these failed to stream media errorsPlex Media Server Logs_2019-10-23_08-14-45.zip (5.0 MB)

Yes but the logs are much easier to understand.
You have a complex and rich network environment.
Your system was working well, but it’s not anymore.
I don’t recognize the pattern of errors beyond network related.

Oct 23, 2019 08:12:27.905 [6184] DEBUG - Failed to stream media, client probably disconnected after 655360 bytes: 10054 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host

When your player forcibly closes the connection, I’m doubting the problem is the server.

There’s a few curl errors, too.
Have you tried testing with Remote Access disabled?

I disabled Remote Server–same issue.

Can we get some more logs now that Remote Access is off? Thanks.

Plex Media Server Logs_2019-10-29_17-22-21.zip (6.6 MB)

Just did it again.

Lots of fail messages about streaming media connections being closed by the software on the host, with 20% of those messages complaining about the connection being forcibly closed by the client.

Because you’re on Windows, look to discover what is getting between Plex and the network. Is it antivirus, anti-malware, ESET, some VPN, I don’t know what.

Let’s have you restart the PMS and grab new logs after it’s been back up for 6min.
Thanks.

Plex Media Server Logs_2019-10-31_08-02-10.zip (4.6 MB)

I have no antivirus or antimalware running. I’ve uninstalled the VPN I had previously. I’ve tested the same files on Emby and had no issues. I can watch them via media player with no issues.

Does Plex need internet access (or is effected by internet speeds)…even if you add your IP for networks that are allowed without auth?

I’ll look at the logs. Yes Plex makes a lot of internet traffic, trying to grab information about your files and checking for connectivity. How much network activity can be avoided by allowing your local network without auth? I don’t know exactly.

This was a weird error, malformed url.
