Video on iPhone?

Server Version#: 4.125.1
Player Version#: 4.10.1

Hi. I just started using Plex, so I’m pretty new to the whole concept. I’m sorry in advance if this question is too obvious or has already been answered, but I couldn’t find anything on the forum or by Googling it.

I have an iPhone 6s (not sure if this is relevant to my issue), but I can’t see my Movies anywhere. I created a temporary playlist with just a movie file, which I can find when using the web version of Plex, but then on my iPhone, I can’t find that playlist.

Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

That’s a fairly ancient iPhone and version of Plex for iOS (Plex for iOS version 4.10 was released in April 2017!!!).

So… unless you run an almost similarly ancient version of Plex Media Server [edit: which is strongly discouraged and insecure], there’s an increasing chance of incompatibilities (e.g. changes to the server which are no longer compatible with such an old player app).

Thank you for the quick reply.
I was a bit confused about the version after reading your reply and went to the App Store and noticed that the latest version is in fact 4.10.1, which came out a month ago… but then I tried to search for Plex. So what I have installed is PlexAmp 4.10.1
I then installed just the Plex app, which is version 8.34, but has the 1 minute playback limitation. I can play audio and video though, unlike the Plexamp app.

Do you know what the difference is in both apps? With PlexAmp I can listen to audio as much as I can, but no video at all. With Plex, I can play both, the app is way more in line with what I see on the web version, but has that 1 min limitation.

Is there anything else I’m not aware of? Why 2 apps? Is there a specific reason for that?

Thanks!

Plexamp is a pure audio player. So no video support at all.
That’s intentional. Focussing on one task allows you to be better at that one task. And indeed Plexamp is a lot better at playing music than any other Plex client type.

You can unlock that with a one-time payment in the app store.
Or by going with a Plex Pass subscription.

I see. I would assume that they would come up with a single app and then just add restrictions there instead of having 2 apps to maintain.

Can you share some issues you might have experienced or heard of?
I mean, I can keep both just in case, but always default to Plex first and only rely on Plexamp if something weird happens.

Yeah, that’s awesome too, because it’s one-time and it’s just $6.
I was looking at the Plex Pass subscription and for now there’s nothing there that I need to do that justifies that monthly payment.

Other than the playback limitation and the quality you mentioned, is there anything else that Plexamp can do that Plex can’t?

I didn’t mention quality.

Plexamp follows a whole different philosophy. You will get the whole extent of it only by using it. And the best bits of Plexamp are only available with a Plex Pass.
So for a free user, it is mainly the differing operating philosophy.

Here is a little list of what Plexamp can do, of which only a few things are available in the general app: [How To] Plexamp 4.6.1

I meant quality of the app/service, based on what you said: “be better at that one task”, not necessarily better audio/video quality, for example. That’s why I was asking if you had any issues with Plex that you didn’t have with Plexamp.

Thanks. I will take a look. And yeah, I will have to start using both and if I need something else, I can always check the Pass subscription.

Really appreciate your feedback and help! I almost discarded Plex because I was having some issues, but today I figured them out. Still learning how it operates, one step at a time…
