The 2025 version Plex of the iOS app is a terrible unfinished product

The 2025 version of the iOS app is a terrible unfinished product. Let’s not even talk about the interface issues, but just focus on the missing functionalities and the following critical flaws:

  1. The music library feature is gone. In my music collection, the albums are manually sorted, but Plexamp does not support displaying custom sorting. I need this feature, so I still use Plex to listen to music.
  2. It doesn’t support IPV6 connections to NAS. Many countries are facing IPV4 address shortages and won’t allocate IPV4 public addresses to home broadband users, so IPV6 is the only option. As a result, I can’t connect to my home NAS when I’m outdoors.
  3. The photo library feature is gone. Although it was incomplete, it was still usable.

Why did the adorable development team release an unfinished product on the Apple App Store? I spent an entire afternoon using community software along with an old version of iTunes to download the previous version of iOS Plex and manually installed it on my phone. I won’t be updating it again unless these issues are fixed.

It seems they purposefully left out many of those features, likely because they are losing money and didn’t want to spend time and money to do that since they think that PlexAmp is better with music, which it clearly isn’t - ironically it’s also a half-baked product. So instead of creating one very good product, they created 2 fairly bad products.

I agree completely. The new mobile app is, IMO, rubbish.

For example, why remove access to music libraries? I find Plexamp to be persistently buggy, and those bugs never seem to get fixed. I hope like hell that the Apple TV app isn’t the next to be buggered-up.

If I had an ongoing Plex subscription (I have a lifetime sub) I would cancel it and use any of the free media player alternatives.

If they are easily reproducible, make posts and tag Elan. From what I have seen, Plexamp issues are more likely to get attention and quick fixes than anything else around here.

Thank you! I shall start doing so.

I’m on iPad mostly, and the player has become so much worse.

  1. The initial loading/buffering spinning icon does not go away unless I pause the stream and resume
  2. Screen flashes black for a solid 5-10 seconds when turning subtitles on/off
  3. No Picture in Picture? What?
  4. If I lock/unlock my screen and resume playback, a few frames go through OK, then the image freezes while the audio continues
  5. Again when locking/unlocking, sometimes the stream is cut shorter than the video length, which causes the app to think I’ve completed the stream when in reality I just got to the end of what was buffered/loaded in memory.

None of this happened before the refresh, which is just peachy. Anyone from plex team aware/working on these issues?

I completely agree, was disappointed as well on download movies, not anymore like On Line, just a file name… a shame

The new UI should still be in beta and a separate app. One particular pain point for me is the ability to click on an actor to see other movies they’ve played in. This hardly ever works and I’m always redirected back to the home screen. Stripping features is cool and all but the ones being kept should work!

I think they hired the Sonos engineers who got fired for messing up that company.

The timing on the IPv6 deletion is challenging, especially given many ISPs (at least in Australia and NZ) are now charging for non CG-NAT or not even giving the option for static or dynamic IP address. Hope it’s just a matter of time, once again I can’t find any specific mention by anyone at Plex to clear this topic up, has anyone seen anything specific?
