Plex Player app for ipad/iphone

Server Version#:
Plex Media Server for Synology DSM 7 v.1.40.3.8555-fef15d30c
Player Version#:
Plex: Watch Live TV and Movies for ipad, version is current

Apologies, first post, struggling with format…

OK I have recently installed Plex Media Server on my DS923+ Synology NAS and have managed to get content to show up there (still a huge mystery, but not the focus of this post). So now I can log into the same Plex account as the one I’m using on the NAS from other devices and have been able to see the content and play it successfully. I’ve found this to be true on all the devices throughout the house: primarily plex player apps on Google TV and plex player apps on iphone and ipad.

Everything seemed to be working great, so I had my friend at home install the Plex Player app on her ipad and log into the same Plex account as the NAS and at first it looked great, the content was there and she could play it. But later when she sat down to watch something properly, after one minute the show was stopped and the following pop up took over the screen:

The thing I don’t understand is why this happened when she tried to watch content from the NAS on her ipad, but when I did the same thing on multiple devices… ipad, ipad pro, iphones, smart tvs… and I was able to watch unhindered by any playback limit.

The only difference I could think of is that she is accessing the NAS Plex Media Server remotely while I am at the NAS location (family residence). Could it be accessing the NAS server from a different network is what caused the playback limit to apply?? So I tried testing that theory by switching off wifi on my iphone so it has to use cellular data to access anything – and that cellular data is not on the same home network as the NAS, so I opened Plex player on the iphone using cellular data, logged into the same plex account as the NAS Plex server and started playing content, expecting the error to appear after a minute, but it did not appear at all. So unless I’m missing something, that shoots down the remote access causing playback limit theory.

With that, I’m stumped. Still, while the discrepancy remains a mystery, the bottom line is that we need a paid version of Plex on her ipad to make it work, and that is really the only solution, correct?

Any and all feedback welcome!!

Any particular issues with or praise for the app?

You don’t have a Plex Pass. Only a Plex Pass will unlock all mobile apps on a certain Plex account. (and those of its managed users as well)

So that means that you unlocked your mobile app with a one-time payment in your app store.
This one-time payment is not a Plex Pass.
And it is not bound to your plex account. Instead, it is bound to your app store account (the “Apple ID” in this case).
Since your friend uses her own app store account on her mobile device, it doesn’t make a difference whether she uses your plex account or creates her own account.
In order to unlock the mobile Plex app, she’ll have to make the one-time payment as well.

I don’t remember doing that but I may well have. So a lifetime plex pass is like $120 and that will apply to one plex media server account as well as any number of plex player apps on any number of devices which access it?

And what is the one time activation cost for a plex player app on a single device?

and what about the plex apps on google tv? I’m sure I never paid for any activation on those.

It applies to one Plex user account. The number of servers that are connected to one Plex account is not really restricted.

It does not apply in general to each account to which you have shared some of your media.

It applies to all apps which are signed into your user account, as well as apps which are signed into a “managed account” of yours.

Managed accounts are for direct family members which don’t use an own independent account, ever. i.e. mainly kids and with whom you may share some of your plex playback devices (e.g. the TV in the living room)

Regular, full plex user accounts can be invited into a Plex Home, which would make them also eligible to the app unlock.
However, the number of additional users in a Plex Home is restricted to 14. And all members of a Plex Home will appear in the User Switcher, which is probably not what you want if the person in question is not a family member.

It is not per device, but per app store account. You can have several devices using the same app store account and thus have the app unlocked on all of them.
It is about $5, depending on your location and taxes.

Only the mobile apps require unlocking.
Google TV is not on mobile devices, but on TVs and set-top boxes.

more thoughts: so the investment that will prove to be the most beneficial is to purchase the Plex Pass for the NAS installation, which is going to end up being where all my content lives. Then, all users to access my NAS Plex Media Server will be able to benefit from that Plex Pass, correct? Any number of users on various devices and various installations of Plex, the NAS Plex Pass will allow them access without playback limits?

Just trying to make sure I am clear on this before buying the pass.

No, see above.

OK having now read your last reply I’m seeing an error in my understanding of the plex pass. So it is applicable to one Plex user account… but that one user account can have multiple servers set up. For example, it looks like I have my macbook set up as a plex server and also now the NAS. Hmmm…

Then with who can access it… anyone who can log in to my user account or a managed account on my user account. I think it’s sinking in, slowly…

Thanks, please correct any further errors in my thinking…

OK I just bought the Plex Pass for $120, now must upgrade the versions of Plex Media Server I have on Macbook and on Synology NAS. Did the Macbook already, then went to do the NAS and here is the page I’m looking at:

It seems there are more versions of Plex Media Server for Synology than there were… how do I know which one to select? Before I was using Intel/AMD 64-bit which seemed to work, but there are others now, how can I determine which best suits my Synology DS923+??

Feels like I’m at the start of a steep learning curve.

No. You do not have to upgrade.

A Plex Pass enables additional features, no matter which version of Plex Media Server is installed.

It also lets you download beta releases of Plex Media Server.

The details of new features / fixes in each PMS release are available in the release notes
.

No. Those versions were always listed.

The DS923+ has an AMD CPU (tech specs). Use the build for AMD CPUs.
