Video playback stutters at "original quality", transcoding is smooth

Hi there.

On all my playback devices (Android Smartphone, iPad, TV and Web player) every video (encodes as mp4) is stutterin when playback starts in “original quality”. But when I manually force the player to transcode the video - even if I transoce into the same bandwith and resolution - the playback is smooth and nice.

Can anybody tell me, why this happens?

I tried to turn of “original quality” playback and always force every player to transcode, but I did not succeed. Only the webplayer I could force to this behaviour - therefore I unchecked the “direct play” and “direct stream” on the debug page in the settings window. But on iPad, Android and TV I could not find any similar option.

Isn´t it possible to turn “direct play” and “direct stream” off via the Plex Media Server settings?

Thank you for any help

I am not sure what server version you are running or even the platform.(may make a difference)

Those settings would be the “original quality” in the droid platform.
Android go to settings/quality/home streaming(for in your local lan) and set the quality to lets say 720p 4megs
Phone remotely would be the internet steaming option.

I don’t own any fruit products so I can’t help you there.

iOS settings are under Settings - Advanced.

Question: Is this attempting to view remote or local?

A side note. All transcoding occurs on the server side. Any setting you select on a client device just tells the server what to send. You’re not actually changing anything on the device. Knowing this may help you track down your issue.

If you’re only having the issue remote, you can do what I did to solve buffering and stuttering: Settings > Server > Remote Access - Set the remote bitstream rate to progressively lower settings until you get the desired result. I’ve set 4mbps (720) which not only solves my remote issues, but also keeps friends and family limited as well so several streams running at once play nice with my bandwidth.

Thank you for your hints. I will try them as soon as possible,

The “stuttering” occurs not only in my home lan. It is remote or home streaming.

After thinking about it, I guess the problem could be a wrong codec or something like this. Is this possible? What would be - in your opinion - the best codec and video file container for most devices (Android, iPad, Web)? Is there a codec / container the matches all of these devices?

Can anybody have a look at these example media info - is there something you would blame a stutterin in direct play to?
