Video plays for 15-30 seconds, then back to show summary

Hey hey,

Not sure why this is happening, but intermittently when I start a show via a connected Android client the video will start up and appear to work ok for ~30 seconds.  However, it then stops and drops me back to the summary screen.

I can often kick start it again by either using the Remote app, or flinging from a Windows machine.

This happens on any number of videos, regardless of container or codec.

Any thoughts?

I’m fairly sure that this is not a RasPlex-specific problem. But we need to be certain.

Have you tried doing the same with “Plex Home Theater” as installed on a PC ?
If that works fine, every time, then the problem may be RasPlex-specific.

Does this happen when you start a video normally in Rasplex, i.e. not using an app or from Windows?

What version of Rasplex are you using, which version of PMS, what container is the video using, which codecs? There's very little info in your post to go on if you want some help.

Regards.

@Ned:
He only mentioned it happening when launching videos from Android devices.
It was only for the ‘kickstarting’ after getting the error that he mentioned using Windows.
So I think this is a repeat of an earlier problem with the Android client.

If it is the same problem, then it should happen with PHT on a PC as well, when casting to it from Android.

Evening!

Those are fair questions...

-- I have not encountered this behaviour when watching shows directly within Chrome/Browser

-- Fairly certain I'm running the latest, or nearly the latest version of RasPlex, and the associated Android PlexPass app

-- We generally avoid launching anything directly from within the RasPlex menus, as the unit runs w/o mouse/kb.  To that end, I can't ready verify how often that behaviour may occur in this scenario.

-- Latest occurrence in Windows PMS .9.11.1.678-c48ffd2, running on Windows 8.1

-- Latest occurrence w/ .MKV file

Another quirk here which I observed three times now, has been that the Audio will start, but no Video.  At the same time, the video/show stays on the summary screen.  We were able to in the latest scenario just stop the show, and restart it at which point it played correctly.

I'm happy to go poke at logs to see if there is anything that might be going sideways.

Thanks gents - any feedback would be appreciated.

I'm afraid you misunderstood my request for results on a PC.
Results of watching a show in a web browser have no bearing on this issue.

What we need to know is what results you get with the PC version of PHT = "Plex Home Theater", which is exactly the same program as RasPlex, except for being implemented on a different computer platform. RasPlex is based on PHT source code, so any bug that is present in PHT will almost certainly be replicated in RasPlex, and will be fixed in the RasPlex release following after that bug has been fixed in the main PHT project by the programmers of Plex Inc.

But if the bug does not exist in PHT on a PC, then it is RasPlex-specific and needs to be fixed in RasPlex coding directly.

So we need to know if the bug also occurs when casting show episodes to the PC version of PHT, in exactly the same way that you normally cast such episodes to the RasPlex version of PHT.

Audio without video seems like a CODEC issue, which leads me to ask a series of questions:

What CODEC info do you have for these videos ?

Do you have the optional RPi CODEC licenses installed (by editing "config.txt") ?

Is the problem intermittent for a given video (so that it sometimes works and sometimes not),
or is it consistent for each video (so that a failing one always fails that way) ?

Do these symptoms change if you switch the video quality settings between "Direct Play" and bitrate limits ?
