Server Version#: 1.25.6.5577
Player Version#: 8.31.0
For some reason everything I play now has video skips that lead to sync issues and not just with 4K/TrueHD files. Everything (1080p, AC-3, etc.) I’ve tried tonight does it and the only thing that changed from last night till now is the player updated to 8.31.0. Change logs don’t show anything earth shattering so I don’t know WTF.
Shield Pro is on the latest 9.0.1 + hotfix, but that’s been updated since it came out and this wasn’t happening till now. Could still have something to do with it though.
I also rebooted pretty much everything, server included, when trying to figure out what was the culprit. Also, the same files play fine on my ATV4K so I don’t think it’s the server. I think.
Here are some logs from the shield and also from the server. I’d appreciate a look at these as I’d really like to have my TrueHD/Atmos stuff playing and not transcoding (on the ATV of course).
I have to throw my hat in the ring, too. I last played a 4K MKV from my PMS on Windows Thursday morning, 24 Feb 2022 (bad weather day in Central TX, no school for teachers!)
I tried yesterday and noticed after about 3-5 minutes, the video began to buffer. Massive bandwidth showing in dashboard (above 350mpbs) and then drop out to below 50 mbps. The spikes up and down just continue after the first 3-5 minutes. I have tried Akira (4K with no HDR, 5.1), LUCY (4K HDR10 Dolby ATMOS), Rogue One (4K HDR10 7.1 DTS-HD) and Ghostbusters: Afterlife (4K DV and Dolby ATMOS).
I was on PMS for Windows 1.25.6.5577-c8bd13540-x86 and PM player for Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 8.31.0.31102 (fc3592c2). I noticed NVShield shows that the PM Player updated to 8.31.0.31102 sometime on Thursday.
I rolled back PMS for Windows to 1.25.5.5492 and the issue continued. I then switched over to Apple TV 4K and the movies played just fine; Atmos content shows as Multichannel + Dolby Surround on my Marantz.
I can only conclude that 8.31.0.31102 on the NVShield Pro 2019 messed up 4K MKV files.
I’m sorry but I don’t have time to gather logs and submit all. Hopefully, someone else will be able to. I have to get back to grading and planning for next week.
I took myself off the beta channel for player updates and have now rolled back to version 8.30. Early testing seems to indicate everything is OK but I haven’t watched more than a few minutes of a film so can’t be 100% sure.
It does seem as though something in 8.31 is causing an issue though.
Yes, I noticed that line in the changelog and flagged it in the thread that I started about this issue. Clearly, they messed something up through trying to ‘improve’ the playback.
I do wonder what was wrong with TrueHD playback in the first place but I guess we will never know.
How the bloody hell did you get off the beta? I uninstalled it and when I go to search for Plex the beta is the only one I see. Obviously missing something here…
I used my phone and found an option to remove myself. I waited about an half an hour before I could then find the release channel on the Shield and install it.
Hmmm… on my iPhone and iPad app I see a setting for the betas, but it isn’t active. And on the Shield app I don’t see any setting for that either. Guess I should of thought that whenever I signed up for the beta in the first place!
I watched the rest of Mission Impossible II tonight using version 8.30 and there were no sound issues at all. 8.31 definitely seems to have a problem with Dolby audio.
The issue here is not with the audio, as that plays just fine. It’s rather the video skipping like crazy every few seconds as a result of the audio and video going out of sync. We believe this is caused by “Player: improve TrueHD playback performance” introduced in the first 8.31 beta. Anything other than Dolby audio seems to work just fine.
My experience is of very short audio drop outs that gradually get worse, causing the video to glitch/buffer. It was if the server was transcoding and not able to keep up, however both audio and video were direct playing.
It’s even stranger because all my audio is bitstreamed to my Anthem processor so there isn’t any decoding being done on the Shield.
Direct Play here as well. Not sure if this even happens with transcoding. Can’ say I’ve noticed audio drop outs, but the video skipping is extremely obvious.
I went scorched earth and got a Zidoo Z9X. It works pretty good with great PQ, but of course I lose the ability to use Plex. I’m still flip-flopping between this and the Shield for my main movie watching device.
And I found the link to leave the beta. That took a while.
Wow had never heard of that thing, looks cool. I am having an issue but it may or may not be the same. On the beta channel and all Shield Pro hotfixes applied, all hard wired. Seems to happen only with Dolby Atmos TrueHD soundtracks on 4K (I am not sure if I have any non-Atmos TrueHD soundtracks to test with). Tautulli and Plex report Direct Play but micro stutters in video eventually put audio out of sync. Audio never seems to drop. Louder scenes/panning shots seem most often impacted but sometimes it happens even in a quiet close-up scene. Playing the same file on Emby, everything works great. Maybe the new Android TV video player will help.
