Anyone know why the Video Thumbnails are always out of sync with the video? I’ve seen this reported as an Apple TV issue, but they are a few seconds off even if I use the web player. Any fix to this in the works? It’s been this way for over a year now.
Do you mean the thumbnails that appear when you pause, and when you’re scrubbing to a new location in the video? Those are generated in advance and by default they’re 2 seconds apart.
Or the thumbnails that appear in the Dashboard/Now Playing? Those leverage the same preview files, but they’re not intended to be real-time. They update periodically, when the client reports its playback status.
That’s clearly not the same place in the movie that I was skipping to. If they are two seconds off by default… could someone please explain the logic of that to me? Because I can’t make any sense of it and it renders this feature useless.
Is there a way to make it correct and not be off by a few seconds?
They aren’t “off” in time deliberately, they’re just every 2 seconds apart, so they could be before or after a scene cut. Is that what you’re seeing?
Some clients can only scrub to 10 second intervals anyway. The web client is one of the most granular, but I don’t know if it can do smaller intervals.
I’ve never tried generating them more frequently. You could change it to 1 second and test. That would make the preview files twice as big and use twice as much space.
Ah, ok. I think where my misunderstanding was is how it actually functions, which makes more sense when I actually think about it. duh For some reason, I didn’t think of it as taking a series of snap shots at a selected interval. That makes sense to me, and I’m going to chalk this up to me accepting how it is instead of how I imagined it to be. haha! (Man, the number of times I bust on others for that…egg on my face right now…)
