I have a big problem an issue I have been experiencing for at least a month now.
With lets say 90% of my videos in Plex, when I play them they turn “green” and are impossible to watch.
What I do usually is that I use information, locate them on disk and whatch them with VLC.
I know it terrible
So I thought of asking here for help if someone had a similar problem and managed to fix this.
I have tried a few parameters changes that I read on the forum but none have worked for me yet.
I am using Plexserver installed on a SYNOLOGY NAS (420+) last version = 1.24.5.5173-7000
And Plex for Windows — Général Version app as a player installed on a normal 64bits Windows 10 computer last version = 1.35.1.2632-c6783c78 September 17, 2021
Thanks in advance for your help,
Z.
PS: Sorry if I don’t fit in the proper forum I just didn’t know exaclty where to post this… if a moderator can tell me for next time or move this it will be appreciated.
@tom80H > Do you have the same experience if you disable how transcoding on your server?
Thanks Tom for your answer. Can you tell where I have to disable that ?
Also I think it might have to do with a problem on my computer or Plex player and not the server because I just made a test on another computer where I have Plex for Windows 1.31 and it is working fine.
You can check the Now Playing dashboard of your server (Activities) while playing the video in both players to see if/how the items are transcoded when streaming in the different clients.
@dlrohwer I hope I understand what you mean by “display adapter”.
My computer screen is connected with HDMI to DVI to the graphic card which also have another HDMI cable which goes to a DENON receiver which has another HDMI cable that goes to a JVC projector. Wow when I write that I realize how complex it look ah ah ah…
Hope I understood well your question
Since I forgot to put a screencapture to display my problem here is an example so you can better see why I use VLC for now instead of Plex :
OK, that looks like a classic hardware acceleration problem.
By “display adapter” I meant “video card”. Nvidia? AMD? Just what’s on the processor?
When’s the last time you updated your driver?
Try turning off hardware acceleration in the app settings. The checkbox for that is under Settings > Player > Use Hardware Decoding. Uncheck it and see if anything changes.
Oh, and those cables . . . damn. I hope that they’re short and good quality. That’s not what’s causing this problem but . . . damn.
My card is kinda “old” since I am using an old computer that I put near the DENON amplifier.
it is a
AMD Radeon HD 5450 1600 MHz
RAM 1Go 1 024 Mo / 64-bit DDR3
PCI-E x16 (PCI-E 2.1)
GPU 650 MHz
DVI HDMI
PCI-E
Do you think I would need to change it ?
At first I thought I would run plexmediaserver on this computer and then decided I would use the server package of the synology instead (don’t remember why I made that choice though).
It used to work well until I had this green problem.
Oh by the way, I just unticked the Hardware decoding and it worked
Thanks for saving me man, it hepled a lot !!
Can you tell me more how you thought of that and what is exactly hardware decoding ?
For the HDMI cables, do you have a suggestion of speed or type of cables because there are so many of them now I am not sur what is the best to choose from.
I use an adaptator because this card had only HDMI and DVI out so I had to make a choice.
The data from the video file needs to be processed into a form that can be displayed on what it is you’re playing the title on. There are two main ways for that to happen: A) let the CPU handle it in software, and B) let the video card handle it in hardware. The hardware in the video card is designed specifically for this purpose so it’s much faster at the job than the CPU. Using hardware decoding also frees the CPU to handle other things more efficiently. Therefore, in general, hardware decoding (also called “hardware acceleration” in some programs) is greatly preferred in most circumstances.
In your case, however, the video card in your system is a little . . . uh . . . weak. That 5450 is >10 years old now and just isn’t up to the demands of heavy video decoding. It’ll work fine for a lot of things like word processing, but it’s choking on the amount of data being thrown at it when you try to use it for PLEX.
There are two big clues that tipped me off to the hardware decoding issue. First is that the output goes to one color. That’s a classic sign of a decode failure. You’re only getting one color channel. The other hint was that things played fine in VLC which has a different approach to hardware decoding than PLEX does.
You might want to go to the AMD site and get the latest drivers for that card. Sometimes that’s enough to let you turn decoding back on without issue. Sometimes the card is just too old no matter what.
The ultimate solution, though, is (you guessed it) a newer system. As usual there’s few problems that money can’t solve.
Honestly, I would just leave it given the system you’re driving it with. If they’re working then don’t bother fixing them. It’s not worth it given the system that you’re running unless you start to see a lot of jitter or other defects coming out of the projector.
Thank you again @dlrohwer for your detailed anwser it was a real pleasure learing from you. Thank you for taking the time to teach and solve, I hope you are a teacher ahah so students can benefit from you knowledge and generosity.
I went to the AMD website to update the driver, it is now consider legacy so it means the last update is from July 2015 and will not be updated again.
Running msinfo32.exe I had the exact model of my motherboard wich is MSI MS 7752 and the name of the processor I installed which is Processeur Intel Core i7 3770 K CPU 3.50 GHz 3501 MHz 4 heart 8 process
Of course it’s an “old” computer so I now have another computer in another room that I use for main use.
I wanted to try to use this computer instead of my NUC that I previously used because it was making so much noise it looked like it was going to burst !
If I can updgrade the graphic card I would be happy too even though I understand its not the best time to do that (with all these bitcoin miners ahah), but if anyone can suggest me anything without changing the whole computer so whith this motheboard I will take happily any suggestions !
Ok I will leave the HDMI cables for now.
What I need to change are the ethernet cables in my house but this is another story
