Video type

Recently im having videos fail because i run mcebuddy on them they are being converted from mkv 264 to mkv 265 and plex doesn’t detect the video type has changed

the library has the option turned on to scan every 6 hours and in the past this has never been an issue only recently ill have to manually go into item and hit analyze and the video type is corrected

ive gone thru and converted my entire library just about and it only appears to be an issue on movies not tv shows

any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated
I am running the latest beta for the server and it doesn’t matter which player it fails on all

(edit) after checking with a friend who is running the same setup just on a windows server his appears to work so its something with linux and the new movie agent is my guess

Does the replacement have the same name as the original? If so, Plex will not pick up the change with a re-scan. You’ll need to re-analyze the movie (I ran a test with PMS on my DS918+, I had to re-analyze to pick up the x264 to x265 change).

If you’ve updated multiple movies, you can re-analyze the entire library, not just individual files. In Plex Web, right click on the three dots to the right of the library name, choose Manage Library -> Analyze. Reference: Library Actions.

Suggestion: Give the replacement file a different name, add it to the library, let Plex recognize it, then remove the original.

  1. In Settings -> Library, check the boxes for Scan my library automatically and Run a partial scan when changes are detected.
  2. Add the movie with a different name. For example if current movie is Movie (year).mkv, use Movie (year) [x265].mkv.
  3. Plex should pick up the new addition as a duplicate, showing a 2 in the upper left corner of the movie artwork. If it does not, manually scan the movie/library.
  4. Get Info will list details for both movies.
  5. Delete the old version of the movie. Plex should pick up the change automatically. If it does not, then manually scan.
  6. When finished updating movies, Empty Trash, Clean Bundles, and Optimize Database, in that order, to clear out any unnecessary information in the Plex Media Server database (screenshot below).

Note: Have Plex analyze the movies during the maintenance window. Plex performs a Deep Analysis during the maintenance window. It picks up additional details beyond what is found when the media is initially added to the library.

In Settings -> scheduled tasks, check the boxes for:

  • Update all libraries during maintenance
  • Upgrade media analysis during maintenance
  • Perform extensive media analysis during maintenance

turning on Upgrade media analysis during maintenance did not help

I am over writing the old with the new so its the same name

im just confused why the tv shows dont do it and my buddies pc running windows doesnt do it

No idea why PMS acts differently for TV shows and on Windows. I don’t have PMS installed on a Windows system, so unable to test.

I have not updated yet, but noticed latest beta fixes a media analysis bug.

  • (Analysis) Media analysis wouldn’t trigger correctly in Plex Movie libraries when modifications were detected (#12041)
