Replacing x264 movies with x265

I have recently replaced a lot of movies (H.264) with (HEVC Main 10). In the past if files were replaced this was visiable on the GUI. Since a few days (maybe weeks) this is not working anymore. On the PLEX apps (Samsung TV, iOS) the movies are shown correctly but if I try to run these movies on a laptop (e.g. Chrome) it does not show the movie (no picture but correct audio). This is only happening when I overwrite a H264 with X265). If I add a new X265 movie it works correctly. I run the most recent Plex Server on my QNAP NAS. Can you please help me to resolve this issue. Thanks Kai

Server Version 1.20.3.3437:
Player Version#: Web browser (e.g. Chrome)

Did you hover over the movie and instruct Plex to Analyze it again?

If not, it will still assume it has the H.264.

Dear ChuckPa

Thanks for you answer. I found this out as a workaround too.

As mentioned it was working some time ago:

  1. Overwrite the exiting file with new X265 (file has exactly the same name)
  2. Plex automatically detected the change vom X264 to X265 and it was visiable right away and movies could be played

Now this seems not to work anymore. I replaced about 500 files like this and do not know which once are affected now (only some of them). Any other “bulk” operation I can perform?

Thanks Kai

normally if the library is rescanned, plex can detect changed files.

you might want to confirm the permissions have not changed with the new file and that they are readable by plex…

Dear TeknoJunky

That is actually a good point. I have recently installed the new QNAP Version: QTS 4.3.6.1446 build 20200929

But I did not changed any settings there perhaps the Plex Support guys know more or can investigate this issue a little further. @ChuckPa maybe this might be a hint.

Thanks Kai

Dear @ChuckPa @TeknoJunky

It seems to be resolved with the new Plex Beta Release ( Version 1.20.4.3508). The video displayed value is automatically updated again.

Thanks Kai
