Viewing By Folder Doesn't Work with Parental Controls

Server Version#: 4.108.0
Player Version#: N/A

This is perhaps a fringe use case, but nonetheless the feature seems to be broken in this situation.

If you have a Library of Personal Media, you cannot view that Library by Folders if ANY restrictions are in-place for Movies for the user trying to view it.

My specific setup is this: I have a “Personal Media” Library for Sports. In that Sports Library, there is a folder named NFL with subfolders for different years. This type of content is easier to browse on Plex by Folders. I’ve assigned a content rating of TV-PG to all of the videos in this library. A user with Parental Controls enabled is able to view the videos in this library, granted their restrictions allow TV-PG and don’t exclude TV-PG in the “Movies” section of restrictions. This is working as designed. However, when viewing this Library, if this user changes to “Folders” instead of “Movies”, Plex returns a message saying “Sports” is empty. This happens regardless of the specific content ratings Allowed or Excluded. If ANY rating is Allowed or Excluded, the user cannot view by Folders.

That is intentional. It is mentioned in the support doc on restrictions a couple times for both ratings and labels.

If one manages their files with movies in folder named the same as the movie. Restricting R rated movies or only allowing PG13 movies would still let a kid see movie titles on the folder that may not be appropriate like Nymphomaniac or possibly much worse for example. Folders are not media items and don’t have content/label restrictions on them they cannot be hidden individually by restrictions so we hide them all if any restrictions are in place.

Ah, well I guess that makes sense. An option or something to allow folders would be nice, but I imagine there aren’t enough people that would benefit to make the effort worth it.

I guess I need to come up with a better solution to personal media organization.

Thanks for the response!
