Virtual Disc Player

A Virtual Disc Player (VDP) integrated into Plex would be an excellent feature. Currently, adding TV shows or movies from DVD’s or Blu Rays is quite technical and is often challenging even for experienced users. Further, ripping material from a disc usually denies the user of all the other options that are normally available with a physical DVD/Blu Ray player. For example, with ripped content we can’t see the custom menu artwork, watch deleted scenes or other documentaries, use chapter selection options, or even watch the included trailers; at least not without a lot of additional work.

What I propose is a mechanism by which a user is able to image an entire disc, basically a copy operation using a program provided by Plex. That disc image can be moved into the Plex library. Plex can then playback the disc image through the VDP, the virtualization of DVD/Blu Ray player hardware, and do with the disc image exactly what a physical player would do with the physical disc.

The added feature should make things much easier for less technically proficient users, and restore ease of access to other content for everyone. Perhaps I’m the only one that feels this way; I couldn’t find anyone else talking about it. What do you people think? Remember, if you want to vote for this, “like” the post.

won’t happen.
