Server Version#: 4.75.0
Player Version#: Vizio 5.32.1
Recently I’ve come across videos that would play but there would not be any sound. They would play OK in the web browser and on my phone. My solution was to simply open the video in OpenShot and write out a new video. That seemed to work but the resultant new video file was like 10x larger.
It just happened again so I decided to do a little bit of investigating. Seems the .mkv file had an audio stream of E-AC-3. Hmmm… Seems new. Is it the Plex server itself that doesn’t support this codec? No, otherwise it would play OK in the browser or phone. Perhaps it’s the client then.
At this time I found that I could use ffmpeg to change the audio track from E-AC-3 → AAC. That fixes the problem.
So I decided to try out the Plex App on the PS4. It had no problem with the eac3 codec and played fine. So I’m thinking it’s just the app on my Vizio TV that is not up to date or just doesn’t support eac3 audio.
Looked to see if there was an update for the Plex app but I can’t seem to see how to do that on my Vizio TV. All the websites I found described buttons I don’ have on my remote or screens or behaviors that just don’t match what I see on my TV. My Vizio Model is M65-F0
Most likely, disabling Dolby Digital Plus setting Settings → Audio will fix the issue, but I’m interested in what chipset you have since we should only be trying to direct play audio the TV supports. What’s the chipset that is listed in Settings → About?
You might consider stating what app exactly we are looking for Settings. It occurs to me it could be the TV itself, the Plex player on the TV or the settings for the Plex server. Turns out you mean the Plex Player running on Vizio.
Settings → Audio on the Vizio Player is English (HE-AAC Stereo). Correction, you only see that IFF you are playing a video and then go to Settings. I guess that’s saying that this particular program is using English (HE-AAC Stereo). If I stop the playback and look at Preformatted text → Audio I see a toggle to toggle off Dolby Digital Plus.
