Do you guys ever plan to update the app for this TV? Live TV viewing is available on other platforms, including my kids’ Roku TCL televisions. The Vizio, though, gets no love…? It is such a basic implementation of Plex that it’s embarrassing. Do you guys ever plan to update this app? I’ve had this expensive as hell TV for almost a full year now and I have yet to see a design update come across for the Plex app.
Whats odd, is that the Vizio Smartcast apps are just HTML5 players I think. So its just the webplayer, but its like an old version of it. Most apps on the Vizio are pretty bad IMO. So I got a ShieldTV… but it doesn;t quite do everything I want. So I got an AppleTV 4k, but it doesn’t do everything I wan. Things got expensive.
The SmartTV app is going through a redesign. We went out to LG models first and some Samsung models now have it. We will continue to update and bring it to other Smart TVs as we go through our testing.
Edit - Note that some TVs may not be able to upgrade to the v2 app due to hardware/software limitations. We won’t know until we complete our testing, so stay tuned to our release announcements for updates on when a TV does get it.
Just curious, but I’ve been looking to get a Shield. What does it not do that you would want it to?
Funny you say things are getting expensive. After everything I’ve purchased to get things where I want them, one of the last things my wife said to me about IPTV and “cutting the cord” was, “You told me this would be cheaper.”
Thanks for the information. Are we looking at a year before the updates go out? Or something closer to a month or so? Just curious on what kind of timetable to look forward to before jumping in and buying something like the Nvidia Shield.
I don’t have any info on timetables.
No Dolby Vision support. No auto framerate on any app except Plex. Doesn’t support all TV everywhere apps. A few other more minor things. I actually like the ATV 4k much better. My only real issue with it is live TV on Plex doesn’t work very well. Has to be transcoded, sometimes a channel wont play at all. If only Plex would use MPV instead of the built in player like Emby is doing, but thats really a separate topic.
Automated Play Next is definitely missing from the Vizio app.
That and a better movie interface like the browser UI with rating, related movies, actors/actresses on the same page.
Chiming in here. I would love to see this app updated. for the Vizio (I have an M-series). I expect some variations in the Plex app from device to device, but I was absolutely shocked recently when I logged into Plex from my Roku, after watching it on my Vizio Smartcast for the last 8 months or so. Smartcast overall has been generally disappointing, despite offering Plex as an app. And Auto Play - which available for virtually every other streaming media (even Netflix for Vizio) - is sorely missing from the Smartcast app.
It’s a bitter pill since I just upgraded the remote for my TV, and I love that its technology can be utilized so well for the TV (including Plex), but if I watch Plex the way it’s meant to be watched, with all the options it’s supposed to offer, I’m stuck using Roku’s simple, dinky, remote.
Ah, sacrifices!
Do you guys ever plan to update the app for this TV? I switched from another media server platform to Plex because the Vizio TV
had the Plex app. I guess a very basic app, no Live TV
support. So, will it be updated?
No responses from the developers since September of last year. I wouldn’t hold my breath on them ever updating the Vizio SmartCast app…
The way the app was written does not support Live TV. We’ve switched to our latest v3 app which we are testing on various platforms. I don’t know if/when it will come to Visio. Currently, the new app runs on Samsung and LG.
While I am able to use my Roku device for Live TV, I would rather use my Vizio SmartCast app as the TV has a wired connection. I have had issues with picture quality using my Roku over wireless and I have an AC wireless router nearby.
Good luck with getting the Vizio Plex app updated. The thing has been as basic as possible since I’ve had my TV (over a year now) and I doubt it’s going to change.
If you want a better Plex experience, I’d recommend not using the built-in app and getting a Shield or something similar. Sucks, because I’m in the same boat…but I’m not sure if it’s Plex that doesn’t care about their Vizio users, or if it’s Vizio being difficult in allowing Plex to do what they need to do.
Either way…Plex could definitely provide better responses than, “Don’t know if/when it’s coming to Vizio” Why? Because Plex doesn’t want to support Vizio? Or because Vizio doesn’t want to support Plex?
2016-2017 (and possibly 2018) Vizio TVs were never designed to get smartapps, it was all about casting…
The first M series even came with a tablet instead of a remote. They then reworked their “OS” to have apps, but performance is nowhere near where you’d want it to be. The CPU in those things probably super weak and slow…
Watching Netflix on it instead of my ShieldTV is a real pain because navigation is so slow… But then you get Dolby Vision out of it.
+1 . Please update the Vizio app. I hope Plex will do it.
Does anyone know the differences/updates among the 3 versions v1, v2 and v3?
Thanks
I am also waiting for the Plex for Vizio app to be updated, allowing for Live TV & DVR access. The newest version 3.13.13 doesn’t allow this access. It’s working fine on my Sony TVs.
I can use Plex Live TV on my iOS device and chromecast it to my 1st Gen chromecast. I cannot do the same for the Vizio. If you’re arguing that device is more powerful than the TV I purchased this week, I think you’re severely misinformed.
It could be Vizio or it could be Plex, but I’m willing to bet money it’s Plex. All we’re asking for a real reason. Not a “we don’t have plans to release” reason but a reason that says “Vizio hardware (or software) cannot support our plans for X reason.”
My guess is that cannot really justify it giving that response.
Can you explain how you are doing this? The Plex app doesn’t have that feature.
No you cant, unless you use “screen mirroring” instead of casting regularly.
And I said 2016-2017 TVs, not TVs bought lthisweek.
No idea why you decided to quote me, but your post doesn’t make any sense.
