Volume very low with Plex for Windows

Server Version#:1.18.8.2527
Player Version#: 1.6.3.1009-57cf57c8

My volume on my PC is extremely low ever since I switched to the new program. I have to have my volume at 70 in order for the media to be playing at the same volume that Plex Media Player had when it was at 20. It is only this program and I can not find any setting to fix this. It is annoying because it is only on this program. All my TVs and all my remote streaming devices are fine it is just this new program. Am I missing something or is it this new program?

Do you have Multi-Channel Audio Boost enabled (set to anything but None) in Settings > Plex for Windows > Player?

I have that set on Huge and there is no difference between that and off :frowning:

I tried all the settings thinking it might be a problem with huge but they were all the same

Here is Plex Media Player:

I use both.
Why don’t you?

because I reformatted my PC and they got rid of the download link…

edit… didn’t see the link in forums but my point still stands that it isnt on the main site anywhere

@JuiceWSA yeah agreed… the Plex for Windows is crap IMO… almost no keyboard shortcuts audio is low, interface isnt anywhere near as intuitive… the only good thing is accessing server settings but if I am sitting at my computer its just as easy to use the web interface so meh

I also have low volume with Plex for Windows.

Server version: 1.18.8.2527

  • speakers are set to 100%.
  • Windows volume is set to 100%.

What else can I try? Is Plex effectively just broken? I gave up with Plex about 3 years ago because of this problem and thought I’d give it another shot now (on my new computer). Dismayed to see the same exact problem.

Any ideas what I can try? If Plex can’t easily get the basics right (like sufficient volume), then can someone please recommend an alternative that can automatically download video thumbnails the way Plex does and (ideally) does a good job of working with Chromecast Ultra.

What confuses me is that I’m not doing anything fancy. Just trying to play The Dark Knight locally on the same Windows laptop that’s running my instance of PMS. It’s not streaming across my network and only one computer is involved!

I’m willing to take some time to troubleshoot this. If you need more information about my setup, please feel free to ask.

Try PMP:

Once Set up - switch to TV Mode where you will find many enhanced features - audio being among them. There is also ā€˜passthrough’ mode - worth a shot.

If seeing no pain relief there, go to the Windows Audio Section and see if, at the Audio Control Panel, for the audio device you’re listening to, open it’s properties and enable some enhancements, particularly the Loudness Equalization.

Works a treat over here for buried dialog tracks, but your problem may be something else.

Thanks. I’ll give it a shot.

It’s frustrating that I can play all my media files with VLC or Windows Media Player with no audio problems at all, but then I play them in Plex and suddenly max volume is inadequate and I can’t even fix it after hours of troubleshooting.

It’s the sort of thing you would expect to work right out of the gate!

I hear ya - as long as Loudness Equalization is on…lol

I’m feeling a ā€˜pass-through’ may be what you need - but you fiddle around and report back. There are a bunch of audio settings in PMP’s TV View Settings menu. It’ll be confusing and take you while to work through them.

Also determine if the audio is in Direct Play or being Transcoded in a Direct Steam. If the latter, in the app there is/may be an Audio Boost feature, that will boost in increments you choose transcoded audio. It does nothing for audio in direct play.

In the app settings there also may be:
Allow Direct Play - Auto
Allow Direct Stream - Enabled

Server/Settings/Transcoder:
Make certain the Transcoder is NOT disabled - and the wording may be so strange you think you have it on, when you don’t. The Transcoder MUST be allowed to work.

If you are watching on a TV or Device - those items have their own audio settings that if not set right may confuse Plex to point it doesn’t know what to do.

Yes - it’s a PITA.

It’s absolutely unbelievable that they stopped supporting the perfect Plex Media Player (i.e. TV view or ā€œPMP 2.53ā€) windows app that could direct play anything you threw at it and replaced it with the new Plex universal app (ie web interface or ā€œPlex 1.6ā€).

All my bass is severely downgraded and volume much lower with the the new Plex 1.6 while DTS audio is now starting to glitch on my old PMP 2.53 (only happens with very select movies but crazy annoying nonetheless that I have to launch different apps for movies that don’t play properly in PMP 2.53 any more).

Absolutely hate the fact that something once working perfectly that should be the BARE STANDARD to be able to play media on a PC / Mac is now forcing me to buy an Nvidia Shield if I want to have a seamless experience.
