I am new to Plex and plan on using it for personal and family use only, so I don’t expect a lot of traffic but a lot of content. I plan to use either Makemkv to let me back up my physical discs, and Playon or Tuneskit (open to others) to get purchased digital products moved to Plex. Is there any concern that through metadata etc we can be tracked and punished? I understand this is walking on the the legal line but just want to be able to watch my dvds. Currently they sit unused because it is easier to go to Netflix than the player. Would VPN be an answer? I just don’t want to get in trouble over something silly. I did a search for the topic but did not find one that fit but I will be happy to read if I missed it. Thank you in advance.
No need for a VPN, no trouble coming round that corner.
You can use 10 VPNs - it won’t make Plex any more secure - and it won’t stop Plex from gathering your data to feed ‘internal logistics’.
I use PIA - and exclude Plex entirely from it’s ‘protection’.
I feel fine - and so does Plex.
I too use PIA Application Exception / split Tunneling and believe it great. Recently I have noticed this possibility to give some extra safety. As for Plex if your using https, that lovely Green padlock is also a plus.
Using this in a Browser: https://app.plex.tv/desktop#
you could use :
Add it to Server, Router and indeed to your VPN. That will certainly reduce DNS binding issues
Are you saying no one would know what is on my Plex regardless of VPN or not. I am safe to have whatever? I am more of a follow the rules don’t get in trouble guy.
Thank you. I don’t care that they have some data, I just don’t want it going to others, authorities, that I have this data.
Plex is already secure.
As long as you don’t circumvent the adequate protection trying to further protect it - you’ll be fine.
I did do the almost unheard of dark-black-web-hack by not using the standard 32400 public port, but that’s about as far as I felt I needed to go.
Very simplistic analysis, I hope your other endeavors in life are more expansive. It simply not that simple is what i’m saying, ones ISP’s in many countries record and report traffic. VPN services in many cases are a contract that do not report or more importantly do not log your traffic in any way.
So can you demonstrate where that is a security issue if you are a anonymous user, paid with Bitcoin or voucher, email 3 third party to non physical address. Protonmail for example.
I truly can not understand your statement, as your lack of knowledge on the subject is just stunning. I have also read your post summary and I question your authenticity as being very negative That all said, you need to do your homework prior to statements of that nature, as it is absolutely not true. This opinion is in no way inflammatory intended, please don’t take offense but take it a reflection of your stance.
A lot of the VPN providers are legally forced to keep logs, if they are based in a country that has these laws. PIA is US based, so they probably do log.

PIA absolutely does NOT keep any logs , of any kind, period.
… and with the click of One - maybe Two buttons - Plex is made to GO AROUND the VPN for reasons many find out when they get a Green Check for a moment - then it turns Red.
$32 a year?
Where do I sign up (I’ll actually have to sign out - 'cause they bill be once a year and will probably bill be after I’m dead until the money runs out…lol)?
You can believe this (or not). I don’t.
I do.
Ya’ll can roll around in that little bastion of happiness ya’ll got going on over there, but on this side of the Ditch we have Trump, proving that we’re screwed, and reality slaps us in the face every day during The Fake News Hour…
I believe PIA - one of the few things left I can believe in.
