Want dynamic library remote access somehow

Currently I have a mix of content arranged in several libraries: movies, tv shows, documentary features, documentary series, music videos, other.

I would like to share some of the content with family members at several other locations, all of whom are at different ages or have different sensibilities. I am hoping not to have to duplicate the media in multiple folders on my server (a NAS which is approx 70% full), but have tailored selections of child-suitable movies, nature documentaries, etc. (which I can manage on request) so that I can invite each of them to remote access and be confident that they won’t stumble into content that hasn’t been agreed to.

Is this possible? Or is it a feature on the wishlist that I can vote for?

Thanks
T

  • Organise a folder structure /Movies/Adult Movies/Movie Name/ and /Movies/Kids Movies/Movie Name/ (in other words, the Kids Movies are in a subfolder of Movies)
  • Make a Library “All Movies” that points to /Movies/ , share that with the adult users
  • Make a Library “Kids Movies” that points to the subfolder /Movies/Kids Movies/ , share that with the users that are kids

That way, no duplicate files, still two libraries.

You can even make a third library “Adult Movies” pointing to /Movies/Adult Movies/ , which then won’t contain any kids movies.

Cool. Glad it’s straightforward.

Presumably if I continue to scan Movies that will refresh both libraries?

If I create the “Kids Movies” folder and move the selected media into it, will a single scan sort everything out? Or are there more steps required?

If you do “Update Libraries” it will refresh both libraries.

If you just specifically tell Plex to update one library, it will only update that library - there’s only one file on disk, but there are two entries in the internal Plex DB.

My grandchildren will thank you, and so do I.

Cheers!

Thanks this is exactly what I need
