I hope you’re all well.
Please could someone assist me, I’m not the brightest tech whizz but I get by, but my friend is not a tech whizz, and I’m trying to be able to watch a movie with them at some point over the weekend.
I have read the support pages, and im still confused as to what setup or players/web browsers/servers are necessary from both sides in order watch a movie together.
here’s some info:
Host. me:
Based in South Africa.
My operating system - Macbook pro running OS Big Sur. 11.3.1
Plex web version Version 4.57.4
I have plex media server installed on my Mac.
My media is on an external drive connected to my laptop.
I watch the movies on my iPad or on the web browser.
Friend I want to join me for a movie:
I would like to invite Josh to watch a movie, however, im not sure of the technical requirements for him. Ive looked at the support pages, but cannot ascertain if he needs plex web, plex server or plex player. He is using a windows PC and he’s based in the U.K.
Could you give me a bit of assistance to help me set this up so we can both get it right.
I’m not sure what he needs to install from his side and how to go about it.
Does he need to install Plex Media Player, Plex Server or … on their laptop, how do we do it
What Arejay73 posted… your friend needs a Plex account so you can add them as a friend and share that movie… and one of the apps listed in that support article.
They need no server of their own.
Yes I have, it doesn’t answer my questions tho, properly.
it mentions me being able to share, by inviting them by their email address, but I’m not sure what APPLICATION they need, or do they only need to go to the plex.tv website and create an account?

once they have created an account they will watch the movie with me in the website?
Can they watch anywhere else such as Media player?

Correct. In addition, you will need make sure you invite them as a friend and share the library that has the shows you want to watch together; like @tom80H mentioned. Also, they can use a local Plex App or the App.Plex.TV Web App.
The following apps currently support the Watch Together feature. Generally speaking, everyone using the feature together will need to have the newest release of their particular app. The minimum requirements may also increase over time, as fixes and improvements are made in the apps.
