Hi, thanks for reporting, I’ve passed this on to the engineering team.

I’m experiencing this exact issue as well, with the same description of events and versions as OP. Seems to have started right around the time 8.12.1 for tvOS was released: Nov 30. iOS, Xbox and browser versions work for joining a session created by tvOS, but tvOS black screen 100% of the time.
