I turned it back on and restarted my server, disabled it again, restarted and it now works… Thanks!
They could make it a pink polka dot to indicate watched/unwatched for all I care… I’d gladly deal with that if they would restore an option to have a grid view for TV episodes instead of endless right scrolling.
yeah seems pretty clear there will soon be a point at which Plex is too enshittified to use. now they are diving even harder into their streaming service by producing original content, and pushing it to the front of the Discover tab.
Please change the colors for watched numbers back… they simply do not stand out enough… it is not a pleasant user experience and has diminished the Plex experience greatly. I tried for months to get used to it, but I just can’t deal with it any more.
Since they still haven’t made this ok… I have started a feature request… please vote
There is an existing one:
I initially thought the same but I think they are looking for something different ![]()
I can’t find the setting to display the unwatched orange triangle indicator.
because Plex removed the feature. this thread exists to express our displeasure about that.
Hey! These guys HAD a great UI idea!
A small orange triangle will be displayed in the top right corner of the poster for unwatched items when viewing a Library.
https://support.plex.tv/articles/201018487-mark-as-watched-or-unwatched/
but now they are pushing their streaming service, so forget all the good ideas.
It’s a shame that we have to either look at the ugly watched check mark or nothing when it would be so easy and preferred to just show an unwatched orange triangle like they originally had!
Plex, all I want for Christmas is an orange unwatched triangle!

On my macos app the counter dissappeared. After i went to my account and disabled the counter for personal media and enabled it again afgerwards it started working again.
the unwatched counter is still there for groups of TV episodes. What is gone is the single unwatched flag for movies or individual TV episodes, and that is what we would like back.
I realised today I can install a second Plex Server on the latest version (to get new library features), and then continue using the web user interface of an old version. Then I get to keep the orange triangles in my web based Plex (that I use on my desktop).
I’m testing out Emby. It at least has unwatched flags for new TV episodes, and maybe they will choose to implement it for movies in the future. Plex has obviously made up their mind.
Also nice that there’s no attempt at shoving a ■■■■■■ Emby streaming service in our faces.
Interesting. Are they accessing the same database or are there two separate instances of the database? I’m asking because I would like to know, if you watch something off of the older server, does it update the status on the new server?
They are two separate servers, configs, and databases.
I do not sync my watched items, so they remain separate.
So it’s just two severs, one old (UI and backend) one with the new indexing features that I require for long episode numbers. But as I can access one from t’other I can use the old UI with the new server features.
Edit: I might have bitten the bullet though, as I updated my compose files recently. I mainly use an old Plex For Windows 1.45 build.
The unwatched orange triangle indicator in the upper right corner has disappeared. In the upper right hand corner there is now a checkmark that has appeared. This checkmark is displayed over all watched content. In doing so, it has taken focus away from all media that has not yet been watched. It has added a blemish to everything that has been watched, while at the same time, making it more difficult to find what you want to watch next.
While you can remove the the checkbox blemish and display nothing, it does not help to indicate and draw your attention to what has not yet been watched.
This is most notable for “Movies”, “Other Videos” and completed series of “TV Shows”.
I am hoping that Plex can address this to the satisfaction of its customers. Thank you.
