Watched Checkmark VS Unwatched Orange Corner

If you have ever visited forums/message boards like for Infuse, you’d be shocked. Granted they have their own set of issues but nothing like what I see here.

I understand the feeling. So much.
I love Plex, but unfortunately, it seems to be a recurring theme…

at this point i doubt more users bandwagoning will make much difference, but having the checkmark for things that have been watched has been annoying forever with tv shows and is just completely awful for movies now.

i get that you are focusing user interaction on the platform for people using streaming services where they will never actually watch more than the tiniest fraction of content available to them, but for people actually running servers and actually using this software for it’s originally intended use, having a library of checkmarks all over the majority of your content is just so, so ugly.

Perhaps so for you, but I have a library with more unwatched movies than watched. I happen to like the watched icon.

It’s definitely a preference situation rather than a right\wrong situation which is why so many are advocating for an available control for it. Including “off” as an option; which after saying it earlier I’m thinking more and more that I’d prefer that option myself for movie libraries.

I think a significant part of the disgruntlement comes from Plex making such a significant change to how the UI\UX has worked for the past several years - if not from the start I believe - without any notice or comment. It feels very inconsiderate to Plex’s customer base which has been a large part of Plex’s growing success (particularly the long term customers).

Hi team,

I do not see the option to remove the green ticks on posters since the latest update. Any help guiding me to the SETTING to remove them would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I understand the frustration, but is there a technology company has never made UI/UX changes without telling users? Yes, it would be great to have the choice, but do you really want to tie up developer resources to enable that, when it’s likely a relative handful of people who care enough to be posting here? And do we think Plex has to implement a similar choice for all other UI/UX changes they decide to make? I personally would prefer they put those resources to work on fixing real bugs.

That all said, I know there are other recent changes that haven’t gone over well, like removing Director, Studio and the like from the pre-play details pages. Plex has listened to the negative feedback and are starting to put that stuff back in, so feedback matters.

There is no such option presently. Folks here are advocating for one, but Plex has not responded one way or another on the possibility.

Consistency
Since first using Plex, the standard has been to use the orange flag up the top right as an indication that something is either unwatched or new. It’s meant to be something that draws your attention for a reason; having something that draws your attention but means the opposite is just bad UX.

Transparency
I’ve only done a cursory search over the Plex forums and including this particular thread I’ve not seen any mention from a Plex staff member commenting on the issue.

Simplicity
One of the Plex developers could implement a user preferences option in less than an hour. It keeps people happy, so why not do it?

A) They are preparing to bring Plex in-line with other streaming services (one could argue consistency here…)
B) The developers needed to look busy

End of the day, I’ve cancelled my yearly Plex Pass as a result of the change. I used to do the yearly because I believed in Plex. However, between this non-sensical change and the stance against Hetzner I think it’s time to start looking at alternatives because it’s quite clear where Plex’s priorities are.

I only have one question.

Why?

I don’t like the new green checks for watched things. I don’t want the extra visual attention called to them since I’ve already watched them.

I prefer the previous orange flag for unwatched things so I can quickly tell what I haven’t seen yet.

The lack of communication is truly disappointing.

Just give us a simple option in the settings.

Since it isn’t impacting Roku, iOS or ATV clients yet - at least I haven’t seen it on mine - it’s still not getting a lot of notice or voice either as those are significant client bases. @anon5074910 found out there wasn’t much notice from other users when this change came to Android first.

It did come up a few years ago during the Modern UI beta and got notice then - and the same suggestion to provide a toggle - but Plex backed up on it except later on for TV shows. Personally I think it makes sense for marking TV episodes and seasons complete - I just don’t like the check marks on the series posters myself.

I really hope they just offer an option like was mentioned before:

  • On - Watched Flags
  • On - Unwatched Flags
  • Off

Since the DB is already tracking watched status per user per library it feels like adding a small amount of logic is all it would take to offer a nice QoL customization. I’m only a layman about dev though - but it would be nice if someone from Plex weighed in on this situation at all.

But at the very least a “disable watched status” checkbox for users would be nice.

Edit: Also noticed this change hasn’t come to Plex Local Web yet either…

I remember when this came up during the Modern UI beta and gave the same feedback at the time. They reverted back to the old badge and I thought they got the message and that was it.

Was I ever wrong.

100% on board with the notion that this should be a choice. I don’t personally think the unwatched triangle needed to change, but it’s jarring, unpleasant, and not how I prefer to look at things, with this green question mark. I need my triangles back. Meanwhile, I can accept that maybe some people can prefer the alternative. It should really be a player/client setting. It’s irresponsible and reckless to do stuf like this. This is supposed to be my server where I serve my content. I’m not a fan of people telling me how things should work.

Also note: There is a suggestion, here. Technically it says “undo the change”, but it’s close enough. The fact is, people should have a choice, or they should not mess with things. You can vote for this suggestion, if you like.

We had discussion last year or so when they removed the orange wedge…
They reverted it then and now we are back to this again seriously guys!

Give us the option to get a CLEAR way of displaying unwatched episodes.
The orange wedge was fine for that and now with that same color counter there’s no way of telling in a single glance.

It’s been few months now the ugly « seen flag » (black square at the top right of every movie or show with a green checkmark) has appeared on the LG tv app, and i still can’t get used to it.

  1. I use the iOS app and the web app too which still show the previous and easy way to identify unseen items in any views
  2. I’ve seen most of my content so pretty much all content on LG tv shows up with it, rendering this additional and really ugly display useless
  3. It ugly but I’ve mentioned that already
  4. It doesn’t work on a season or a full tv show serie even if seen which breaks even more the user experience

When or how can i restore the previous UNseen flag mark?

Posted issue last June, and predictably got, and continue to get, no response from the PLEX “team”. They apparently are committed to doing what they please, customers be damned.

The change in the Movie library bugs me, but the TV Show library bugs me more in a way because now the Show posters are never “clean”:

There’s no quick glance or unfocused scanning when looking through several items now - you have to look closely because everything has a marker on it now.

I do like having the marker for how many unwatched episodes are on there - but I do NOT like having the “complete” marker on there. I think movies\tv shows should be handled differently - like it was before the flag switched from unwatched to watched for both libraries.

And again if there’s a collection involved then there’s no marker for movies or tv shows so that’s another inconsistency in both libraries either way.

I was working on some clean-up today and was frustrated with this change all over again.
