In looking at the usual alternatives to Plex, it seems Jellyfin and Emby do watched check marks instead of unwatched as well. Essentially the same thing Plex is choosing to do now (including using green circles with a check mark).
Emby did remove them from Series\Season folders though (after community requests). I’d still like to see that with Plex as well.
Both product forums have similar requests to add an option to customize it a bit more similar to what has been discussed here, including an “off” option. Those threads have engagement from devs at least - sounds like they’re receptive but is low priority.
Jellyfin and Emby have custom CSS options to remove the check marks from web client.
Suffice to say this doesn’t bode well for reversing this change unless Plex wanted to beat Emby\Jellyfin to the punch by offering the customization options around it.
I really do love using Plex and I want to continue using it, but I’m quite disappointed that nobody of the Plex team seemingly has taken the time to respond regarding this situation and either explains the situation or makes it clear that this has been seen/heard…
I remain in the same position regarding these checkmarks, I hate seeing them on every damn thing I saw. Just introduce a simple option to turn this off, can’t be that hard…
On Apple TV i now have a mix of both. Orange unwatched marks everywhere except on the episodeview in a TV Show Library. What is going on? Can we at least get the same markings throughout the app?
Recently saw this for the first time on the Web app, must say I initially thought that there was a bug in my database and that it had suddenly marked everything on my recently added as watched due to the missing Yellow Mark.
Normally I access the web app via direct IP and recently had to use the app.plex.tv/desktop URL instead to turn off All the Activity Notifications settings to Private so that what I’m watching doesn’t get emailed/notified to other people thing.
On the app.plex.tv/desktop URL it marks the Watched items, and on the Direct IP is marks the Unwatched items. I must say that it is heaps easier to find unwatched content when it is what is marked, compared with finding what isn’t marked.
Especially when the colours are so bad, when so many posters are black/dark in the top corner it is hard to see something that isn’t marked with black, compared with something marked in Orange.
I fully support people having options, but I for one would definitely prefer the unwatched being marked in a bright colour.
So for the time being I’m going back to using the Direct IP method of accessing my server.
This is really an UGLY marker, what a terrible design change.
Why would anyone want a ton of green checkmarks all over their watched library? It makes zero sense. Even if that was someones preference, give the user the option for some basic choice and customization.
And why cant Plex respond? Most of us have paid for Plex Pass to support their platform and they cannot take a few minutes to respond in regard to a MAJOR visual change to the platform that is not being received well?
I’ve actually been using the “premium” themes for quite awhile that are part of Plex Pass that turn the corner tab blue or purple because it looks kinda nice on my Roku TVs - a little more subtle… guess that will be going away as part of this change too.
Yeah I played around with the themes recently too, and the different color corner was nice. But I also liked the background color changing to match the image color scheme and the moonlight/bubble gum themes kinda wash that over with their colors.
Interesting, I never knew about that feature, it’s not available in the Web App or the default Android app, it would have been cool to play with other colours.
So… Stil no option to turn this stupid feature off? Are we really going to be forced to use this despite a lot of people complaining and not wanting it?
Does anyone know which version of the Web App has this UI update?
I have just seen an update appear for download on my server and can see that there is an update to the Web App Player included in it. I’m trying to figure out if the update that I can see in the change log on a version between mine and the new version for:
" * Update “played” labels to “watched” for video content"
is the one that I need to avoid somehow?
I have 1.32.8.7639 installed from beta release and my local Plex WebUI uses checkmarks for Watched instead of triangles for Unwatched if that helps narrow it down for you. I didn’t notice myself which version had the change for local web.
ohh for the love of god plex get rid of this dam watched check marks. rather than add a visual simply track via a filter. i loved the orange triangle for unwatched. even the wording is fine o me switching to unplayed and the watched check mark for the love of all that’s holy. stop breaking a system that works. NEw Feature opt in or out. Defauly to off unless the user turns on.
I tried the themes out a while back in Plex HTPC and after using bubblegum (could be the same with the others), after scrolling through watched items, the green watched tag disappears as you move to the next itme?
Comes back after a restart of the app.
The theme appears to have messed with the GUI. I’ve gone back to the default theme but the behaviour continues and is also now doing it in the Plex Web app.
Yup I can confirm! That is the server version that adds those ridiculous green checkmarks.
I got caught but hoping no else does. Really bummed out.
EDIT: This bothered me too much, so I rolled back my PMS to the previous version: PlexMediaServer-1.32.7.7621-871adbd44-x86_64.exe.
Now everything is back to normal. Will keep this version until the end of days as Plex Devs do as they please.
If you want to DL the previous version too just paste this link and install as usual. You are downloading from Plex so no malware or whatever: https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-media-server-new/1.32.7.7621-871adbd44/windows/PlexMediaServer-1.32.7.7621-871adbd44-x86_64.exe
I enjoyed the process of building my library and making it look as nice as possible with custom posters etc. The green checkmark ruins most of that. At least with the yellow triangle I could just mark as watched to get rid of it. I would also prefer to have the option to just remove any indicator.
Thanks JoeIzzard for the upvote!
Hopefully, this gets implemented in a reasonable timeframe but not holding my breath.
I rolled back to the old version and will keep it until it is.
FYI: Plex will also eventually disable support for all plugins too. I use ExportTools and if you use plugins too then I suggest keeping old versions of PMS so when compatibility gets broken you can rollback.
