Watching EAC3 content

Hi
I know that EAC3 content is sometimes problematic, codec folder should be deleted regularly, or the automatic scanner should be deactivated - I read it all.
I have a very interesting other issue with this EAC3 content:
with my iPhone and Plex App - when connected to the WIFI the Plex Server is in - or connected outside WAN with VPN then the content is played.
If I’m abroad and just execute Plex App on my iPhone EAC3 content is not played. As soon as I execute VPN the EAC3 content is played.
So what’s the difference in here that with only mobile abroad the EAC3 content is not played?
Any suggestions?

Plex Relay. It limits bandwidth forcing eac3 to be transcoded.

In other words your Plex Remote is not working.

(Depending on how you have your VPN set up:) All I can think of for this, is that when you are on the VPN, your device’s IP looks like it is a “local” device on the network, so you probably have no restriction on how fast you can be given content. When you turn off the VPN, your IP is external, and either the Plex Relay kicks in if your external access is not configured correctly, or your app is self-limiting the connection and has to transcode.

Unless they’ve changed it recently, most apps have - by default - a self-imposed limit on media streamed remotely. You need to go into the settings of the player (in this case, the Plex app on your iphone) and increase the bandwidth allowed for “Remote Streaming” to be able to get a file in its original form.

FYI, I have had a Plex server on a NAS for over a year, then a dedicated Linux box for 2 years now, and have NEVER had to delete my codec folders. I have never had an issue with EAC3 content (though I admit I do not know how much- if any - of my content is EAC3).

It’s possible that if EAC3 is the culprit, then the few times you listed EAC3 content not working is when a transcode is possibly happening. You can examine your server logs (Debug on, Verbose OFF) when you attempt to view the content to not only find out why a transcode might be happening, but also why the media fails to play.

All Dolby codecs are transcoded by the EAE binary. If you have modified your transcoder temp folder location, or are using a docker container for Plex server, this folder might have insufficient “execute” permissions. Which causes the EAE to fail.
