Watchlist not launching third-party apps

Server Version#: 1.32.1.6999

It was my understanding that If I clicked ‘Watch from this location’ (e.g. Apple TV+) on an item in my watchlist, Plex would automatically open that app and start playing the selected show.

This is not happening for any of my services (Apple, Netflix, Now, Disney or Prime) on any of my Google TVs (one TCL and two different model Sonys).

Do I have to set permissions somewhere in either server settings or on the individual TVs? Or am I mistaken in thinking this is an actual Plex capability?

Thanks in advance,

Phil.

It used to work that way, then the media companies stopped this “deep linking”

I suspect that may be your issue.

eg Amazon now forbids Fire TV apps from directly launching content within other streaming apps | AFTVnews

edit: check this https://support.plex.tv/articles/discover/#toc-4

I’m not on Fire TV, I have Android TV, which the article linked says:

“For most platforms, when you select a non-Plex streaming service that’s available, you’ll be taken to the app you already have installed for that corresponding service. And, for most services, you’ll also be taken directly to the item you chose.”

Is your point that Amazon have prevented deep-linking, so other providers may have followed suit?

I don’t know, possibly. Not sure how up to date that document is either…

What exactly happens when you click on “watch from this location” ?

Sometimes it says ‘can’t open app’ (or similar) as with Apple, or sometimes the screen blackens for a couple of seconds and comes back to where you were (as with Prime)

I only have FireTV and LG TV apps myself, both of these tell me with a message I need to manually launch the appropriate app like Netflix etc.

Sounds like you have a different issue.

I have the same problem. The watchlist is so awesome because it becomes my hub for discovery and adding shows. But it is annoying that I can’t get Plex to open the app.
