I share my library with family and friends. My media is all nicely packaged up in h264 for un-transcoded glory to all clients. Imagine my frustration then that there’s no way for me as the server administrator to default the players that connect to my server to play things in “Original Quality.”
Instead, it defaults them to transcode down to potato-720p-2mbit for no reason whatsoever. I have to handhold them all and walk them through configuring their players to play at original quality. I don’t want to disable transcoding entirely, as sometimes people need subtitles or genuinely need it. What I want is a setting on the server side that “strongly suggests” a default for the client of “Play in original quality unless the user SPECIFICALLY want’s to transcode.”
Please, why isn’t this a thing?
