Defaults to "convert, 2mbps" when "play original" would actually work (and is better)

Playing through Chrome on a laptop, the quality always seems to default to “Convert: 2mbps”. If I manually change it through the icon in the player to “Original”, it works (and is much better). How do I make it always try Original first?

Cheers,

Gwyn.

If you go to Settings | Web Client | Quality you can change the settings there:

Hi Dan! I don’t see “Original” as an option there - it only allows me to select from transcoding options?

You are not by any chance using the old Plex Chrome app?

Do you see the option if you just browse to https://app.plex.tv and sign in there

It may not make intuitive sense but if your server is local and you use the “use recommended settings” it will play videos as orginal on your network (unless they need to be transcoded for compatibility)

if the server is remote you can set the quality to maximum and then make sure this box is checked:

That will play anything below maximum as original. I am not sure what they classify maximum as the next lowest is 20mbs 1080p so i assume its higher than that so anything less than 1080p 20mbs will not transcode the video and play at original quality when connecting to a remote server

Aha - I normally do sign in via app.plex.tv but that shows my server “raspberrypi” as “remote” even if I’m on the same wifi. If I sign in via http://192.168.178.20:32400/, then the server shows as “nearby”.

I guess that’s it - so, is there a better way to do this than going directly to the server’s IP?
(and how would I make sure that I connect “locally” from the android app / chromecast?)

If your IP address uses the same subnet as your server add it to the Settings | Network settings under LAN networks I had to do that for mine to show as local when on same subnet due to my router

in your case you would put in 192.168.178.0/24 if your wifi is a different subnet you could add that one as well in the same format with a comma between.
