Hi, I recently received my new WD My Cloud Home unit and I am setting up the Plex server. I have seen that in WDMCH, Plex libraries are automatically created in 5 different folders per content (photos, movies, music, etc.). I need to create a specific library or folder to contain some photos that I want to share with my brothers, and I am unable to do it.
I’ve tried 3 workarounds, but none of them seems to work:
1.- Creating a new Plex library:
Doing this, Plex requests to set the “type of library” to create, selecting between 5 standard kinds (music, tv shows, etc.). The library is created in the Plex directory, and all the contents of the corresponding library of the same kind previously existing are replicated into the new one. For example, if I create a “photos 2” library, the library appears in Plex (not in the My Cloud Home directory), containing all the same files as the original “photos” library. If I delete the contents of the “photos 2” library the files are also deleted from the original “photos” library.
2.- Creating a folder
The second attempt was to create a subfolder “photos to share” in the WDMCH directory inside the Plex “photos” library. In this case, Plex shows that folder, but there is no way to share it. Or I could not find it.
3.- I have tried to share some photos individually from the Plex photos library. In this case, Plex requires the email or user of the person with whom you want to share, the process ends but the invitation never reaches the destination. I have tried this with different users with the same result.
I would be deeply grateful if someone can guide me.
That’s one of the restrictions of the MyCloud NAS.
You’re mostly stuck with the libraries the WD My Cloud automatically creates for you (you can add others but they’ll alway point to the default folder for each media type).
There’s a number of ways to restrict the content you share with your brothers (e.g. by specifying sharing “labels” and whitelist/blacklist those in the sharing restrictions). Alternatively you can also share single items (incl. playlists).
If your brothers do not yet have a Plex account and the invitation mails give you some hiccups, it might be easier for them simply to sign-up to Plex and to invite them afterwards. This way they can accept the invite from within the Plex Web app.
Hi Tom.
Thank you very much for your quick response and help. I would be very happy if I could manage to share individual files as you suggest. It happens that if I try to share with somebody without a plex account, when they use the link and try to accept they only get an " Hmm, an invite error… Sorry, an error happened when accepting the invitation”. Otherwise, if I invite people who have previously created a Plex account, they never receive the invitation notice. I think there must be something wrong (or a bug) in the invitation tool. I see there are people complaining about this issue Hmm, an invite error... Sorry, an error happened when accepting the invitation''.
