Dear team, I am using WD my cloud home with inbuilt plex media server. Recently the clients smart tv or roku stopped working stating " the server version is not high enough"
The issue here is in WD my cloud home version there is no option to upgrade the plex server version . Does plex not support WD my cloud home version any more?
In the WD My Cloud Home web utility, when I “Enable” the Plex Server for the WD My Cloud Home, it indicates version 1.18.6.2850, however when I log into the Plex site to control the server (plex.tv -> sign in -> My Account -> Settings -> Authorized Devices) it shows version 1.16.3.1402-22929c8a2 for the server on the WD My Cloud Home. I have contacted WD with this issue and sent (rather long) debug log files. They suggest contacting Plex Support in that it appears that WD Cloud has the right version, but somehow Plex is not picking up on it.
I do note that there does not appear to be a way to manually update the WD My Cloud Home firmware - it seems it can only be done via WD’s on-line update.
One “interesting” difference I have with what you experienced. I too use Roku (Plex client ver. 6.7.4.6764abf6bf3df), my phone (Android, Plex client ver. 8.11.0.22186) and an Android TV device (Plex client ver. 8.11.0.22186 as well) to access the Plex server on My Cloud Home - and I get the same “the server version is not high enough” response from all of them. However when I attempt to access Plex server on My Cloud Home through the Windows 10 app (Plex client ver. 1.25.0) it works fine. Not sure if Plex is slower requiring the higher server on Windows 10 or if it is something in their Roku and Android apps.
I too would more than welcome advice and assistance.
Yes I also noticed on my laptop it works fine but when I use Android tv,roku it gives this error. Not sure who will resolve this plex or WD. Hope someone looks into it and provides the steps to fix it.
One other item that might be helpful to any Plex support staff listening. The My Cloud Home I am using is an 8TB device (not Duo) with software version 7.12.1-170.
Thanks for posting this and hopefully Plex support is listening.
For what it’s worth, I just posted a topic with the same issue on a Terramaster NAS. The NAS shows a higher version than what’s listed in the Plex web console. So the issue appears to be device agnostic.
Here is a screen shot of the configuration in My Cloud Home for enabling/disabling/configuring the Plex server, and you can see the higher version there
For what it’s worth, I just updated my topic with a solution - I had a similar issue with my Terramaster (app version different from media server version in the Plex web console) which required me to manually update the OS. Maybe Western Digital has firmware/OS updates for the My Cloud product.
Following up - I just checked my WD My Cloud Home and found a newer firmware version, i.e., WD has updated the software (automatically). I then disabled and then enabled the Plex client on the WD My Cloud Home and it now works - the client apps now read the proper Plex server. As far as I am concerned at this time - case closed.
