WD My Cloud - Security Notification, Blocked Plex Item?

I keep getting this warning from my Verizon gateway regarding my WD My Cloud that I only use for Plex. I didn’t open it this morning and I started getting this over and over as a notification (my NAS name is blacked out for this post): MyCloud-************ tried to access 192-168-1-164.abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz012345.plex.direct but we blocked it. It’s part of the Malicious Sites, Streaming Media, Media Sharing Categories. Should we always allow access to this site?

Same thing is happening to me. Started yesterday evening. I’m also using a Verizon Gateway along with a Synology NAS. Not sure if there is something on my NAS or a coordinated attack is taking place against Verizon gateways. I hope someone has some useful insight on this message.

Plex dynamically creates an SSL certificate and associates it to your Public IP, that message is the result. If you let the ISP block it then no remote access and probably your clients will stop working.

The domain name “192-168-1-164.*.plex.direct” resolves to a local lan ip, which is concidered as an attack attempt by routers with buildin DNS Rebind protection. You will need to add an exception for DNS Rebind protection for “plex.direct”.

Without the exception, it will not affect remote access., though it will affect local access, which results in local playback not beeing able to be played back as such. As a fallback the wan url will be used and local traffic will be considered as remote…

that isn’t you public Ip address it is the local area network (LAN) address provide by your router. Every person who has the same router as you will have a similar local IP. Mine on the computer I am using right now is 192.168.1.122 . There is nothing anyone can do with it that information.

Think of it this way. it is like saying I live in Apartment number 122. But that means absolutely nothing if you don’t have the address of the apartment building.

If I add this exception, will I then be vulnerable to any rebind attacks from an external actor through Plex?

If you enforce secure connections and want to be able to do local playback, there is no way arround it , Add the exception and be good
