Remote Access

Server Version#:1.23.6.4881-e2e58f321
Player Version#:1.18.6.2350 (Western Digitial MyCloud Home)

I have provided the below images for reference.
Had no problems for the last year with remote access until a few days ago and it all stopped working! I’m sure there is something up with that Internal 443 rule but for the life of me i cant get rid of it, delete it and it just comes back.
I haven’t changed anything with router setups etc which makes it all the more strange, just stopped one day and can’t get it back!

If you have configured a dedicated manual port forward for your Plex Media Server… make sure to let Plex know about that:

  1. Check Manually specify public port in Settings > [Server Name] > Remote Access
  2. Enter 28888 in the related field

As for general troubleshooting:
Can you access/see your router and the specified public port from outside your home network? (e.g. using a service like canyouseeme.org)?

The tcp/49592 → 443 forward should not impact the communication of Plex. However if your router doesn’t let you remove that you might have a more general issue with that router. Does that issue persist if you reboot the BT Smart Hub?

Still no dice even when i specify the manual port!
I can see it from canyouseeme.
The 49592 - 443 must be the connection from MyCloud NAS drive to router before any plex additions?

No idea… unless your MyCloud NAS is running a web server and you want that to be accessible from outside your home network it seems obsolete.

As for Plex – to summarize:

  • the port forward on your router is active (tcp/28888->32400)
  • you have added the configuration inside Plex to use tcp/28888 as the public port
  • you can see/access the router’s public IP @ tcp/28888 from outside your home network

Have you verified if you can access your server from outside your home network in order to rule out this is just a case of a bad remote access status indicator (remote access actually working despite Plex telling you it isn’t)?
If it’s not… could you share your server logs please?

I have a server on my laptop and that works fine, placed a file in there and i can stream that from laptop to apps on tv upstairs etc no problem.
MyCloud just not having it!

That’s the state of play at the moment

It looks like there’s an issue with the server’s certificate. This is probably linked to WD shipping any updates beyond PMS 1.18.6 (that version is approx. 1.5 years old). I’m not sure if there’s a fix for that :frowning:

Funny you should say that as I did come across other recent people complaining about the issue I am having as in it just stopped working all of a sudden and the version updates being out of date! I wonder when they will get around to updating this!
Maybe time to think of upgrading my solution as this was a first try at Plex on a NAS and was cost effective at the time!
Any recommendations on an upgrade that doesn’t cost the world??
Thanks again for all the help and replying!!
Cheers

That depends very much on your particular use case, e.g. how much transcoding you’re dealing with, what types of media you’re going to stream, how many concurrent streams, how much storage you need…

There’s a summary of various models and their playback capabilities – mainly focusing on the transcoding capabilities based on pure CPU transcoding vs. hw-accelerated transcoding. Keep in mind that hw-accelerated transcoding is quite powerful and can be a big help with a NAS – however it’ll require a Plex Pass membership!

I have a pretty large movie database including 4k movies.
I share my library with family and friends but with the limited capabilites of the My Cloud it can’t push 4k to them which is not really a big deal but if i was going to upgrade I would prob go for something powerfull enough that it could do that.
Prob only ever 2/3 max streams happening at the same time if that.
Current storage is 6TB but prob would be looing at a bit more.
Wouldn’t have a problem getting a Plex Pass Membership if needed.

Thanks

Hi!
Did any sort of solution ever appear for this problem that you know of?
Western Digital still have not updated software!
I seem to be able to stream from the nas on 4G on my phone and things play (although says limited connection) but the minute I am on local network, nothing!
Thanks!

Nothing that I’m aware of. Somebody from Plex had posted in a related thread that they’re working with WD to get an updated version to their devices. No details on the status of that activity and no ETA.

Cheers!
Could you point me towards that thread if possible so I can keep track!?
Cheers

Here you go

Me again!
Just wondered if there was any reason why I cant even use my nas locally in my house? Files wont play from the WD MyCloud to my tv, all the issues discussed above i thought were remote issues?
Cheers!

Which brings us back to the WD MyCloud Home devices only running a 1.5 year-old version of Plex.

There seems to be an issue with the certificate used in that context. There’s no solution but a temporary workaround:

There’s been a recent post that Plex are currently working with WD to get an updated version to those devices (no status/ETA though)

Same issue here with MyCloud. I worked around it by turning off secure connections. Hope that WD and Plex get this issue resolved. Security is hard and takes maintainence.
