Comparing my library to a friends, the load time for thumbnails and previews on the PR4100 is slow and I’m looking to improve it. The processor can’t be upgraded (based on the server performance, the limiting factor) so instead I’ve increased the RAM to 16GB as a cost effective option.
Is there a way to tune the web server to improve the loading? I know the transcoding directory can used mounted RAM memory, can the metadata files use a similar option? Or should I look at adding an external SSD?
This will most likely not be the response you want but I’ll give you my perspective.
Those WD NAS are fantastic at what they are designed for, being a NAS for storage. They are very limited at everything else IMO.
If as your media grows you find it’s slowing to a point its bothering you then your best solution is to use the NAS for storage. Connect a PC (Windows, Linux, mac whatever…) or some other device to map the storage and then install plex on that.
You’ll get much better performance and probably more longevity of your NAS as its running dedicated for storage.
I think I knew the processor was the limiting factor and as it can’t be upgraded, if I want to improve the loading time for metadata etc the only real option is to link up a separate processor to serve up the Plex library. It was more hope that there’s a clever alternative.
Food for thought, my library load time isn’t an issue yet, more striving for perfection but it’s good to know for when it is - thanks for the good advice!
