We can get Trailers for TV shows now!

Sometimes we have trailers for TV shows now. Well, on the Roku app anyway - can’t seem to find any way to display them on the Web app yet. When did this happen, and when can we expect it for all of our shows?

I was trying to get some TV mis-matches for some research here, and added a fake version of the Powerpuff Girls from 1998. Despite having no idea what the logs are telling me, I looked through the TVDB log and found this line:

powerpuff girls - Added 1 of 1 extras.

Checked the web app - nothin’ - fired up the Roku and sure enough the trailer icon is there and the trailer played.

Can we get more trailers by refreshing the library or series, and/or is it possible to add trailers locally?

How about posting the full logs (the ZIP file) so I can take a look at them?

I have a question about how you’re naming your extras. It seems you’re adding then in an Extras directory but not using the documented naming tags?

Kindly look in this directory: J:\Videos\Movies\Super-Heroes\Dawn of Justice Blu-ray Extras\

You have The Empire of Luthor (2016).mp4 (name fragmemt) without the appropriate tagging as documented
here https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220677-Local-Media-Assets-Movies

It’s my experience, having a fully formed file name (which looks like a movie title) will indeed be matched as one and PMS will attempt to put it in the main library and not keep it as an extra with the main movie.

Is this what you’re speaking of?

No, I’m talking about an actual TV trailer in the TV show library. The original Powerpuff Girls from 1998, The Odd Couple (2015) and Roots (2016) have trailers and other extras on the Roku app. It’s in the com.plexapp.agents.thetvdb.log for example:

line 575 — 2017-01-16 10:01:53,279 (67c) : INFO (logkit:16) - odd couple - Added 2 of 2 extras.

I have the Blu-Ray extras for the Dawn of Justice (and maybe some others) set up as actual movies and match with the XMBC agent. More of an experiment to see if I could make it work, cause I was looking for something to do to keep the old brain active. I do actually add local trailers for movies, but I use the standard naming conventions so they show up as trailers properly.

Help me understand.

You see all the extras that you should in the Roku app but not on all players?

OR

You see Plex supplied extras for some things but not others?

OR

a third?

I didn’t know that Trailers and other extras were available for TV shows. I either hadn’t noticed, or didn’t have a show in my library that had some available.

I’m pretty sure I’m getting all of the trailers and extras available for movies, and they are visible on all of the apps. The TV extras seem to be only available in the Roku app, or are very will hidden in Plex Web… LOL - if I could find my phone, I would check the Android app to see if they are visible there.

Not a bug, just a new feature, at least to me.

They first must be enabled for the Library section. This is rule #1.

If they were not enabled, enable them then go into the library section. "Refresh All’ (upper right corner). It will get everything available. Once available, it will be presented.

I was not 100% correct for series.

Settings - Server - Agents - TheTVDB (Global setting and not library specific)

_ Find trailers and extras automatically (Plex Pass required)_

“What we’ve got here is failure to communicate”
The de-bugging, fix a problem hat is pushed on a little too tight at the moment. Everything is working as expected, there was never a problem.

My point, maybe a little lost now, was that Trailers and Extras for a TV Library (not movies) are at least partially implemented in some apps. It’s new to me, but maybe old news to most. I don’t recall an announcement for the new feature, but have seen several feature requests for it.

Moving on, is there any way, planned or existing, to add local extras for TV shows so they appear int the Trailers/Extras section in apps without using the Season 00/Specials method.

I’ve checked with the staff.

The newer clients (as they are being overhauled / rewritten) are getting all the features they should have which includes trailers, etc. The newer clients have them already. That’s part of the disparity. When will older apps be overhauled/rewritten is something I won’t even know until done. You know Plex… “No Roadmaps”

What the dev team might be plannng for trailers and extras in upcoming stuff is literally anybody’s guess.

With respect to naming local (your added) content, specials / season 0, there is no other method other than what’s already defined here https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220707-Naming-TV-Show-Specials-

Ok…reading this made my head hurt… LOL I think the final post may have answered the question… but if I am reading his question correctly, it is simply this:

When did Plex start adding PREVIEWS/TRAILERS for TV SHOWS???

He simply kept explaining which may have been why it got confusing… He is (if I read it right) seeing trailers while watching TV SHOWS on the ROKU version of PLEX.

His continuation of the question is if this is now a feature…when will it be available on the web version of PLEX as well? Again, if I read his question correctly.

We KNOW you get previews/trailers for movies if you turn that on… I have often thought how nice it would be to see them for TV shows as well… IF you wanted them… which of course, I would!! I’d love for people using my server to see trailers for either new shows on tv or trailers for the many series that I have on my server.

I think the confusion came as he also mentioned extras… while I don’t think (as I read it) he really cared about extras… at least not in the original question…

I’ll try to say this one more time and hopefully my english is better today than others.

Movies

  • Movie trailers /extras are 100% and all know this.
  • The setting for this is controlled at the Library level

TV

  • TV series trailers / extras are still client-specific.
  • Newer clients have them, older do not yet.
  • Clients will have this feature when rewritten
  • The setting for this is controlled in the TVDB agent. (perhaps move to Library as well)

Ist klar?

@ChefGS – you got it exactly right! LOL I noticed I now have trailers and extras for TV shows, didn’t know that was possible, and was excited about the new feature. :))

It was simply lost in the translation somehow, that I had found a bug, or it wasn’t working as expected. I guess I never should have mentioned I found the new feature because I was trying to find some info for another “real” bug in the server.

I hope I didn’t re-confuse anything here…

 I believe we got it now… Again, It was simply a question as to WHEN did it happen… and will it come to WEB… I never noticed it myself but then I don’t use my ROKU version that often…I almost always just use my web version as I have 3 monitors on my computer and all 3 are 42" … I have a sweet 50" 3D TV that I have actually not turned on in 2 months!!! LOL!!!

I have an idea when it might come but until told officially (meaning I see it in hand), I’m as much in the dark as anyone. I hear rumblings but they’re just that… rumblings. Will they come? Oh yeah, I’m confident they will.

What would be REALLY cool (have you seen it?) plevr (Plex UI for the VR headset)
