Web Player on Chrome/OSX transcodes 720p -> 720p, no option to play original

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3830
Player Version#: 4.47.3
Browser Version: Chrome OSX 88.0.4324.41

The player is set to:
automatically adjust quality
Video Quality [Maximum]
Play smaller videos at original quality
Use recommended settings

yet sometimes, I’ll get real crummy quality, and when I have a look in the transcoding settings, it says it’s transcoding to 720p 2Mb/s from a source that’s already 720p and slightly over 2Mb/s, with no option to choose “Original”.

This can sometimes (maybe always, unsure) be solved by a shift-reload, or using a different browser.

I have a report from a user on windows with Chrome experiencing the same, and I saw other users that should know better transcoding from 720p → 720p.

It seems to have improved with the last version of the web player, as I just had this issue again but was able to choose “original” manually. But I shouldn’t have to, as I did configure the player specifically to never transcode. There’s plenty of bandwidth, and buffering is acceptable.

Is this a known bug? Do others experience this too? Is there a fix upcoming?

thanks for your time,
greetings from Vienna,
Philip!

what type of file is it. and what sort of codecs in it. what does the Now Playing on Dashboard say.

The day before yesterday I had a user reporting undesired transcoding on firefox, but I’m not sure if it was 100% the same symptoms as I and the other user had.

In the ff case, the file was an mkv container with Stream #0:0(eng): Video: h264 (High), yuv420p(tv, bt709/unknown/unknown, progressive), 1280x720, SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9, 23.98 fps, 23.98 tbr, 1k tbn, 47.95 tbc (default)

I’ll let you know when it happens to me again with a more detailed report. This is bugging me a lot, as I already can not pre-set original quality on the server side, so I tell friends to set it manually, but now even if they do that, the player sometimes seems to think different. Which not just results in crappy quality, but also a lot of wasted power & CPU resources.
