Weird account situation for one of my users

Hey there guys,

I have a user in my Plex Home who has “weird” issues. Today I checked her account, username should be “Cationally”.

However, on her login screen it says “Kational”, which I presume is an older account we created years back. She now rejoined my server and has used the same email address (She claims she always and ever only had this one email address).

That alone wouldn’t bother me too much, but she and I are German, but for no apparent reason, she doesn’t have the language “German” in her account settings. It just doesn’t exist in the dropdown menu.

This is why I checked her account in the first place, because she streamed yesterday, but said that the default language for all items she streams is English and not - like I’ve set it up in my server settings - German. She had/has to select German on any video, also subtitles are turned on by default for her, which is contrary to my server settings as well.

So I then tried to change her account’s and video language to German, but it just doesn’t exist. How is such a failure possible? And what could it be related to?

Any pointers, maybe from a Plex emplyoee, to sort out this situation for us would be highly appreciated

It means that she has allowed her web browser to automatically translate the “website” https://app.plex.tv
Switch that off for the domain plex.tv and you should be able to select the proper language for the app.

Chances are that her user name might also not be “translated” anymore, after you’ve done that.

Ahhhh okay! That makes sense to a certain degree, but would this affect her standard settings for playback as well? Because she definitely had English with subtitles for all her videos turned on, which shouldn’t be the case

The browser translated “english” to “german”. So she selected that and believed that she had indeed selected german, while she actually didn’t.
It’s complete nonsense what the browser is doing with the automatic translation, therefore I strongly suggest switching that off.

Ingenius Otto! That makes perfect sense, thank you so much!!!

Who would have guessed that haha, not me at least :joy: Will forward that and report back here, thanks!

So, after coordinating where we both have time it was indeed what you said Otto. The browser translated it automatically to English. So we fixed that.

However, on her Fire TV Stick it still defaults to English, if she plays an episode. Anything we’re missing?

That might be a different bug which affects specifically Android. Like e.g. Android pulling the wrong subtitle file, or none at all
or [BUG] Subtitles are not being loaded at all, need to exit and re-play media file

It doesn’t have to do with subtitles being selected wrong or not being loaded.

We’ve selected the correct language via the hosted Plex web app, but it seems the changes didn’t populate to her account/Fire TV sick, as it’s still defaulting to English. Subtitles work fine in general.

Is there any way to manually “trigger” the changes? So that her Fire TV stick makes use of the language settings? We’ve now uninstalled the Plex app from her TV Stick, let’s see if a re-install helps

Usually a “Switch User” procedure ought to do the trick.
If there is no user in the Plex Home to switch to, log out of the plex account, reboot, then log in again should do the same.

Idk what’s wrong anymore to be honest. We’ve made sure German is selected as default language, logged out and in, switched users, uninstalled/reinstalled, yet it’s still selecting English as default.

Weird enough: If we log in to a different Plex Home user, it does default to German on her Fire TV Stick, so I still think it somehow still didn’t pick up the changes

Are you sure that you have changed it in her personal user account settings https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/account
and not in the global server settings (which are only used when the server is not signed in)?

Maybe it is just a caching issue and will rectify itself after some time?

110% sure, yes

That might be the case yeah. We’ll see if it works out tomorrow. As we’ve been troubleshooting this for 2 hours I didn’t want to take more of her time  If all else fails we’ll just delete this account and create a new one tomorrow

Oh, make sure to test this only with videos where she didn’t already touch the subtitle/audio track selector herself.

Yes of course! That’s what we did! We’ve tried multiple shows she played for the first time on my server. They all defaulted to English, regardless

But you might be right. Maybe it really is just a caching issue. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow. Thank you for your help, however

Oh another stupid question: the checkbox is actually ticked?

Yep yep. We’ve tried multiple variations of the settings. With checkbox ticked, without, subtitles eng/ger, whatever. Nothing lead to the desired outcome and didn’t change the default settings
on her FTVS

Solved. After some time everything sorted out properly and the correct language and subs languages are now defaulting correctly to German
