What are you guys doing on Easter break?

I.T. folks gets no Easter break…

‘Tis the time to do some spring cleaning on the ol’ Plex server. Them year-old dust bunnies ain’t getting rid of themselves. At the same time, I’m adding another 4TB HDD. This upgrade will bring up the storage capacity to 24TB.

Other tasks involves mounting an external PTZ CCTV camera (Wyze Cam Pan) and currently, I’m changing out the old busted Cisco IP phones at home with a pre-used but newer models I got off eBay.

Yes. I too must replace a noisey fan on the server. Thnx for the pics

Thanks.

BTW, get Noctua fans. I’ve had these for years (NF P12). This particular model is already discontinued but the newer models promises to be even more quiet and/or efficient.

Installed them more than 5 years ago and my server’s been running 24x7. These fans, although stained and have seen better days, are as quiet and as smooth as the day I installed them.

Heheheee, so what kinda videocard do you have on ur linux box? me = old AMD Radeon HD8350, works decent for watching video.

i acquired an updated HD8570, probably will install now before another decade or so flies by.

It’s a Windows Home Server 2011. Other than running PMS, it also runs a bunch of other stuff like the Ubiquiti UniFi Controller, PRTG, a CCTV NVR, etc… just off the top of my head. As such, it’s a dedicated server and I don’t use it to watch media. It does have a monitor for management purposes, connected using the embedded video.

That’s GREAT! uhh, how many PCs do you use around the house everyday? me = just 3 PC rigs, everything else mostly tablet, phone or NAS. I use a linux desktop one for jukebox, ripping and watching tv shows for bedtime fare. So its about 2009 vintage parts (stuff i replaced). I have older rigs leftover in my garage and shed (blush).
I used windows homeserver around 2001-2003? It eventually caved in after some years, but worked decent for office use cuz of the printer api monopoly back then. Couldn’t run it headless because of the admin like linux.
Yeah, my hybrid home server uses just the embedded video. Really nobody uses it for office work because u can do alot on tablet/browser nowadays. So its mostly server.
Take care and keep on tinkering, here’s an OLDish vid i made back in the day.

Nice!

PCs are something I just can’t live without despite also owning multiple mobile devices; 2 PCs, 2 laptops, 2 tablets, and a smartphone… these are just mine. Then there’s also my wife and kids’ mobile devices (tab and phone), my siblings’ devices (along with their respective families’) and our retired mom and dad (we all live in separate houses in a common compound lot).

My journey started at least 15 years ago. Think MediaGate “media tanks”, WD TV Lives, and yes, XBMC (now Kodi) while going through Windows XP, 7, and then 8 MCE as front-end. But I finally settled on Roku 3’s with Plex Media Server as back-end and I never looked back.

My first ever media server was an old PC running ClarkConnect (now ClearOS) with a measly 60GB of storage (circa 2006). I later moved it to a Windows Home Server v1 around 2009 and then to Windows Home Server 2011 (code named “Vail”) in 2012. I’m still using WHS2011 to this day and have been procrastinating of moving it to either Windows Server 2016 or Windows 10 Pro.

As for my home network, it’s sort of like a living project. Small changes and upgrades compounded over the years have brought it to how it is now. I try to keep an updated diagram of my setup and the one below is already the 14th revision.

I also document my smart home devices. I started this just a little over a year ago with the purchase of a single Amazon Echo Dot. I was hooked… and the diagram below is already the 3rd revision.
