What did you do to the app?

I don’t use Plex for a few weeks and then boom all hell breaks loose the next time I open it. A few things that are really not working for me with this app would include:

  • Took me ages to figure out how to favourite libraries (via see all libraries, though not repeated in somewhere like erm, preferences)
  • Spent a minute or two reordering the libraries via the janky reorder interface (on an M3 iPad Pro) only for that… not to be reflected on the home screen? Even though favouriting them does affect the home screen?
  • Can’t appear to get rid of trailers on the home screen at all
  • Can’t get rid of Apple TV on the home screen, even though it’s unchecked in whatever preference I stumbled across that one time for services
  • Can’t remove discover from the global nav or add anything meaningful to it, like I don’t know, a library
  • Global nav disappears once you’re in a series, meaning it’s three taps back to get to any anchor point (four if you want to go home)
  • Recently added is showing me random old stuff first, but then some new stuff
  • PiP doesn’t work first time, have to switch into the app and back out to make it work
  • And worst of all, why has your playback display mode changed? Older 4:3 content now requires me to set it to “zoom” else I get black bars around the content top and bottom, but that carries across to actual letter boxed content which then needs setting back to “letterbox” in the playback settings? What kind of utter madness is that?

Two other things:

  • The “request for feedback” in whatever thread it was really wasn’t a request for feedback was it? More of a “we’re saying this but we don’t actually want your feedback”.
  • Justifying things by saying “it’s how everyone else does it” – removing music and photos for example – reminds me of when I was a child and would say similar and be met by my mother saying “if they jumped off a bridge, would you?”.

Same here! So sorry I bought a lifetime pass many years ago! Had I known they would continue to destroy the app I would have left the ability to walk away and vote with my wallet. Now that they have my money they couldn’t care less about how I feel about their increasingly garbage updates!

Time to give Emby a chance like many others have done.

I’m having a hard time too. I have a playlist with 2000+ shows in it and there is no way to edit the playlist and re-arrange my shows and it takes forever to load. I want the old app back PLEASE!

I´m so glad I didn´t buy a lifetime pass. They’ve just ruined the iOS app.

You’re one of the lucky ones. But if you change your mind, you can pay the higher price of $325 for a worse experience with fewer features.

It’s $325 now!? How do they think they can justify that!? They have a pretty solid track record the past few years of not caring about their users at all. Glad I bought it 10 years ago before the first price hike.

No, the lifetime pass is $249.99

Ah, still awfully steep for what they have been doing. I think I paid around $75 but that was in like 2014

Is it? Or was the previous lifetime pass price just a proper bargain?

As it is I’ve been using Plex for over a decade, at the current lifetime pass it’d be less than $2 a month. Well worth the amount of use I’ve got out of it.

The $300+ price is if you go through the Apple AppStore (I believe). It’s been talked about due to that 30% cut.

I don’t disagree if they had stuck to the core of what Plex was but they haven’t. I would be more than happy to pay that price for solid updates to the core functionality but those have been lost in recent years in favor this Plex hosted VOD push. I have seen plenty of users, myself included, who don’t want or use those features at all. I have them all disabled. All we want is to stream our personal media in the best way possible and Plex seems to be forgetting that.

I’ve been successfully managing to do that since I started using Plex. It’s just as capable (if not more so) of streaming personal media than in the past. In the grand scheme this app kerfuffle will end up a minor footnote that no-one will really care about.
