What happened to Collections?

Server Version#: 1.25.6.5577
Player Version#: 1.41.0.2876-e960c9ca

I wanted to find out what just happened to my collections. I spent hours creating my collections only to have something happen, just 2 or 3 days ago that updated all my collections. By updated I mean removed some, created new ones, split up a few that I had or deleted some completely. Functionality is also missing from collections for sorting. i assume this was a result of a recent server upgrade, but why would collections be impacted that way?

I notice no one from Plex has responded. Well, just had another server update and guess what? Same thing god darn thing. After my first post, I rebuilt everything in my collections, and now they are all undone again. WTF PLEX??? Someone better freakin answer - I have never been so pissed! As much as I have wanted to keep PLEX, that window is closing rapidly.

There’s not much to respond to – at least I couldn’t make that much sense of your OP.
From what you describe it sounds like you enabled Plex to automatically create collections… those are based on data from The Movie Database which occasionally have to deal with users violating their collection information.

Maybe you can share some more details about your setup and library configuration?
e.g. what agent are you using and have you enabled automatic collections (options will slightly vary depending on what agent you’re using).

Thank you for responding and my frustration. For the last two updates I have seen ma few of my movie posters being changed form the ones I chose. Some of my collections just disappearing, meaning the tags are no longer there and some collections showing up in the library even though they are set to “Hide Collection”. Its been odd seeing all my custom collections just being rearranged, removed, new ones created, from just a server update. I must have changed a setting or two, though not sure which one.

Here is my config.

I have all media stored on a Synology NAS 920+. I have my desktop PC running Plex server (been almost 5 years running, with no issues until now.) I have the basic install with very little config changes. I have attached a copy of my logs if that will help. What else can I provide?

What’s the configuration of the particular library where you experienced this?

From the library’s context menu: Manage Library > Edit…Advanced:
What’s the values set for Agent and any collections related options?

I am attaching zipped doc with a few screenshots to go with the ones above. I hope tis helps. and again thank you. I let my frustration get the better of me.

So… if you want to manage/curate collections all by yourself and not deal with some automatic updates from The Movie Database…

  1. Edit the library ( > Manage Library > Edit...)
  2. Go to the Advanced tab
  3. Set Minimum automatic collection size to Disabled

This might only apply to future collections as your existing ones might not simply go away.
So you might need to recreate your existing collections.

Well, that was easy, thank you so much. Any other suggestions/recommendations?

If your server is running on Windows, but the media are stored on a NAS, you want “Empty trash automatically after every scan” DISABLED.
Otherwise the server may oust temporarily unavailable items from your libraries – and their manually curated metadata with them.

Got it, thank you. So is there a place where I can turn-off the “unplayed” indicator for films instead of setting each film manually to “Played” to turn it off.

You can multi-select all your movies and mark them as played in one go. There’s no other option to simply disable the watched status (I suppose you want to keep track of what you’ve watched / yet to watch?).

  1. Hover over the poster of the 1st item in your library / movie
  2. Click into the little circle icon in the top-left corner of the poster
  3. Scroll to the end of your library – do it slowly so Plex will actually load all the content “in between” (rule of thumb: scroll at a pace that the posters get to show and don’t skip any)
  4. Hold the Shift-Key and click the last item of your library
  5. Click Mark as Played in the multi-select action bar at the top of the screen

Excellent, thank you. I recently rebuilt my library and all films were showing as unplayed. Since most were in fact played, is easier to just set all the played. thanks.
