I just updated my Plex server. Movie Collections now show all of my movies. I tried resetting defaults. I don’t know what cinema edit is but when I tried to delete a movie from the collection, it deleted it from my hard drive. I love what this software can do ONCE ONE UNDERDSTANDS WHERE AND WHAT TOOLS ARE AVAILABLE. Is there help for my Collections? Is there a simple guide to understanding the wonderful tools hidden in this server?
Oh, and I Turned off Smart Collections.
Wrong method. You edit the movie and remove the collection name from the collection field: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201273953-collections/
It was put there by your files having embedded meta tags.
Remove the “Album” meta tag from your movie files. (you can use e.g. mp3tag to do this)
You can’t turn off Smart Collections. You probably mean setting “Minimum automatic collection size” to “Disabled”.
Do you mean
Settings - Plex Web - ‘Show Advanced’ - Debug - “RESTORE DEFAULTS”
?
If you already did that, go to the next item below.
If you did something else, do the above now.
The first start after the update can take a little while longer than expected. Did you perhaps think that the process had crashed and then forcefully closed the server process and restarted it?
If you did that, chances are that your database is damaged. You need to go back to a backup from before the update: https://support.plex.tv/articles/202485658-restore-a-database-backed-up-via-scheduled-tasks/
I have successfully created collections. I see the poster and under it reads “8 movies” or “3 movies”. When I use the Collections tab I see all of my movies, Collections (with the number listed underneath) and single movies (with its year of release underneath).
I updated only Plex, not my whole computer. I didn’t close Plex until a couple of hours later.
Yes, I meant Settings - Plex Web - ‘Show Advanced’ - Debug - “RESTORE DEFAULTS”
You are right, I set “Minimum automatic collection size” to “Disabled”.
As far as deleting a movie, I was following a closed thread of this forum as best as I could. It said nothing about meta tags. What I was trying to do was to remove the single movies from my Collections tab. (by the way, it was simple to restore the movie from the recycle can)
My question still remains: How do I get all of the single movies off of collections?
I just wanna double check that you are - indeed - on the collections page for your movie library? It should be like this:
As you can see, even if I have a collection with a single movie, it does not list any movie year, nor are there any single non-collection movies showing on this list.
It almost sounds to me like you are on the Library page. I know you probably aren’t in the wrong location, but this is the only thing I can think of, and I want a sanity check at this point. Do you have the ability to take a screenshot of the “Collections” page you are on so we can see what you are seeing?
(If you edit the screenshot in MS Paint to block out any sensitive info (as I did), you can drag and drop the file into this forum reply to upload it for us to see.)
Please make a screenshot.
I am totally unsure about what you are describing.
I can see this is the Plex for Windows app.
Question: is the same issue apparent in the hosted web app?
I get the message: “app.plex.tv is unable to connect to “Plex server” securely” so it won’t show me my library.
OK, that is a different matter. Let’s tackle this separately.
You should look for signs of damage of the primary Plex database file, and if necessary repair it:
- activate debug logging (not ‘verbose’!)
- quit Plex Server
- wait 1 minute
- start Plex Server
- wait 5 minutes
- fetch log files and attach them here
Or inspect them yourself. Take a look at the Plex Media Server.log
file and seek for messages about database corrupt
or malformed
.
If you find these, you may have to repair your database.

Ok. Funny, it works fine on my tvs. That error massage occurs on computers when I go throuth the hosted web app. When I go through the Plex for Windows app it runs just fine.
I mean that I don’t get the error message. The Collections tab is still an issue.

I don’t know if this is done correctly. The link for “fetch log files” looked nothing like what was on my Plex. I used this
I pasted this log into Word and zipped it from there

I didn’t see

corrupt
or malformed
.

Sorry, no, You uploaded a very short logfile of the web app, not of the server.
Please make a screenshot of the left side bar after you clicked on the Settings icon at the top.
I saw that before with Plex for Web.
The source of the problem was: different clients (using Plex Web), one showing more entries per line than the other client. After viewing the library with the client which showed more movie posters per line than the other client could handle - then viewing with the “lesser posters per line” client caused exactly the same problem.
That problem (showing movies instead of collections in the collection tab) then expanded back to all clients that that library’s view.
The only known fool-proof method of getting rid of this again is restting the library settings on PMS server (not sure how this is named exactly at PMS settings). Sometimes, it worked to show as less posters as possible per line for library tab on the client whixh caused the problem. But most of the time it did not.
I created a bug report in another thread which was not handled by Plex.
Source of the problem is that this view (numbers of posters per line) setting should be saved on a per-client-per-library basis, not on a per-library-only basis.
That one was my thread…
It contains the description of the work-around to that problem. Maybe it helps you, too.
Which app was used to make this screen shot?
Please use the local web app for now. http://ip_of_server_machine:32400/web
These shots look better. Notice the green padlock icon right of “My teal computer…”
If you go down from there, to Settings - General
do you see only a black page or do you see your server’s name and your email address, etc. ??
If you do, you should be able to fetch the server logs.
