What happened to Plex Player for Amazon FireTV cube?

So today I get home and turn on my Amazon FireTV cube and the Plex interface has changed. When viewing a TV season the episodes were in grid format, now they scroll on a single line. How do I change back to grid format, the line scrolling junk is why I have a Roku player in a box that will never see the light of day. At least give us the option of reverting to the old format. I have a lifetime subscription but looking at how you change the interface so my kids have to ask me how to use it without any way to revert to the well established one annoys me and makes me regret choosing Plex.

Checked the version numbers on the other FireTV cube that still works how I (and my kids) are used to. The version 8.5.2.20133 (dfd59213) works great and is still on my (identical) streaming box. The version on the kid’s box is 8.6.0.20351 (e97d660a) and frankly it sucks. How do I roll back the version number and keep Plex client from automatically upgrading it, even my wife is complaining that it makes it much more difficult to find episodes.

They have said in other threads that it will be changing back to grid form.

Go into the settings (not the Plex app settings, the FireOS settings) on the Fire TV Cube that still has the old app and turn off automatic updates.

Settings > Applications > AppStore > Automatic Updates

If you launch the old app and it mentions the new update being available, just tell it to not update - it wont bother you again.

As far as the one that’s already changed, the only thing you can do is uninstall the current app and install a file download utility. Then you’ll need to turn on allowing install of applications from outside sources (this is what people call “jailbreaking” the FireStick, like it’s some huge deal  ), then you use the downloader app to enter the URL of the previous release from the Plex announcements thread, and reinstall that version.

Same here. Opened AFTV Plex and what the hell happened to my TV Shows interface. This is complete garbage and the Shuffle button is hidden now? My 7 year old and wife are so confused…

Well, others say that the grid format will be back, I hope so, otherwise it’s another subscription to another media streaming platform that I’ll have to pay. There was a reason I threw my Roku in a box and bought Fire TV cubes, I’m seriously annoyed to the point of dumping Plex altogether. Problem is I’ve already paid for the lifetime subscription (when they actually gave users a choice) but that is not a significant factor, I pay for software that works and that has an interface I and my family are comfortable with, they have really disappointed me with this update. I’m not completely sure that auto-update will ever be turned on again if they are this callous in changing the fundamentals of the software.

When ? It’s been 2 days and I’ve had enough.

No issue to resolve, just roll it back to 8.5.2.20133 or let us roll it back ourselves (though that might be a while)

Okay, so I don’t mind if they change the look of the interface as long as it maintains the same functionality. Can anyone explain to me how you can delete a playlists now? It doesn’t give me an option… All I have are “play” and “shuffle”. There’s no further options or “…” where I can delete a playlist anymore. Even long pressing buttons doesn’t give you the option to delete. Maybe I’m blind or am I overlooking something?

OMG I thought my wife would explode when she couldn’t browse her TV shows the old way. WTF? Better change back fast or I’ll be forced by her to find another platform.

Update today, still no grid view for TV shows. Pisses me off that I bought the lifetime subscription and they ignore the requests of their clients. Let us roll back to an earlier version if you don’t want to offer the interface everyone was comfortable with.

Well, moving into the 3rd month soon and still no change back to the grid format or option to enable it. Give us a break here, the scrolling interface is garbage, just let us go back to an earlier version that worked well for us.

Any word yet on reinstating the grid interface, the scrolling one is garbage, it’s hard to tell which episode is selected and choosing an episode is cumbersome. Plex said they would make it an option to use it, it’s still not there.

Well, still waiting for the scrolling interface option but that is now a less pressing issue. With the latest update now I use the jump ahead (right arrow) button and I just get the spinning donut. I have to exit and resume to view the media. Also in some cases the media that played fine the day before now won’t start until I start a different show and go back to it. Not sure how many times in a day I have to force Plex to shut down and clear the cache before it works. I have an i7 2600 server with 16GB memory, Gigabit ethernet hard wired to both Fire TV cubes. Software is up to date as of December 28th, 2020. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the client, reset my Fire TV cube to factory and tried again, no change. Hoping for any kind of solution eventually.

It’s been suggested to you several times… Just uninstall the current version and then sideload the old version. Its pretty easy to do on Fire devices. Then turn off auto updating of your apps.

I’ve been running 8.5.2.20133 for months while the devs figure their stuff out.

Then just watch the forums… when you see grids have come back, you can update.

Good for you, yet another suggestion to roll it back without any indication of where I can find the older versions for Amazon.

They are in the release announcement notes. Plex for Android

That’s the easiest way.

Or the second easiest way is to use Google, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, or any other search engine and type “Plex old version android.”

Then use that same search engine to find out how to side load an app to an Amazon device.

Got a chance to look at this today. Everything is back to normal after rolling back the APK and turning off updates. Thanks very much. Hopefully they’ll bring back the grid format soon and I can start updating again.
