What is 'Library Default' sort order

In my Music library Advanced settings, there is a pop up to choose Album sorting. One of the options is ‘Library default’. What’s that? I thought it was some default setting somewhere, but I can’t find any such thing.

Yes I can change it to what I do want (I have done so), but I’m curious, what is that default option and how is it configured?

I believe the library default is ‘Newest first’. If I had to guess, I’d say it’s there just because Plex is reusing the Edit artist > Advanced > Album Sorting dropdown, where it actually makes sense to have ‘Library default’ as an option.

Yes it does seem to be ‘newest first’, but to me that dropdown implies there is some other setting for this default order. If not, it would be clearer if they simply stated ‘Newest first’ as that option in the menu, instead of referring to some imaginary default, without stating anywhere what that is.

In database terms, what might be considered the default order when retrieving records (i.e. without specifying an order) would be simply how the records exist in the database and likely to be based on date of addition of record. Yet it seems PMS is actually applying a sort order and calling that the default, as I said, without saying what that it.

I thought that there was a sort order that could be set for a library, but that it could be overridden for an album. Did I imagine that?

Yes, it’s definitely confusing, but I still think it’s just confusing UI/bad messaging, and like you said, it should just default to ‘Newest first’, since that’s actually what the library uses.

Not for a specific album, but you can change how an artist’s albums are sorted when looking at that artist. That’s what I was referring to in my previous reply - it makes sense to override a ‘library default’ at the artist level, but Plex is also reusing that dropdown for the library-level setting, despite it not making sense to have a ‘library default’ option at the library level.

Sorry yes, I meant set a specific sort for an artist. If it is still possible, I’ll have to look again.

That is the drop down that should include the ‘Library default’ option. The library setting should just list the available options and not refer to some ‘default’ with no indication of what that is.

Very poor UI.

yeah that is odd. Thanks for report.
