Hi all I have been told by a friend that I should download Plex media player but have paid for the windows Plex app and also paid for a Plex pass but now been told I shouldn’t have paid for the app ? It’s apparently supposed to be free ? and plex pass wasn’t needed either ? It seems way different to VLC which I always used on my mac pro before and all it seems to do is randomly add my photos and films from laptop ?
I’m guessing I have paid for something I never needed or will need !! Help…

he probably wants to share some of his videos with you and therefore wants you to have a Plex account (free) and a Plex client (e.g. Plex Media Player for Windows – free as well).
Once you have an account, your friend can invite you to his server and you can watch content he’s sharing with you.
Some Plex apps are not free but require either a one-time activation (usually 5$ / 5 € per app) or a Plex Pass membership (5$ / 5 € per month; reduced rates apply if you join for a full year or buy a lifetime Plex Pass. However, this is usually only needed for specific functions and apps (e.g. mobile apps which allow syncing of content to your phone/tablet, using Plex DVR…).

In your specific case my first guess is that you don’t need it.
You can contact Plex and ask if they can cancel your Plex Pass… any app activations are usually processed via the app store provider and cannot be refunded by Plex themselves:
