May seem a bit like whinging here, but Plex software oughta be smart enough to know that if I’m using my phone in the house, I’m no different than a TiVo, TV, PC, etc…
I get charging for a PlexPass to use services outside the home, but requiring it simply because of the OS that the device runs just seems like gouging to me.
Kinda do… If I’m using my phone as a player, it cuts off the audio after 1 minute without a PlexPass even though I’m in the house on WiFi. However, if I run the Kodi app connected to the server in the house, works fine but the interface blows.
You need to buy the app - once. $4.99
You don’t need Plex Pass.
I am certain the ‘clever wording’ makes you think you need Plex Pass, but you do not.
With a Plex Pass you get all apps free. If you don’t have Plex Pass you need to purchase the app.
So buying the app removes the one minute cut-off and lets me use both my local and server media however I like? Inside and outside the house?
So as long as I don’t want/need the enhanced features like intelligent mixes and such, you’re good with simply unlocking the app? Still works as a high end player?
Good stuff! Looking to replace using Google Play or Kodi on my phone with a more consolidated player. I’ve got a substantial library on both the phone and my server, and having a good player with good playlist management and shuffle capabilities is a big one for me.
Our mobile apps (Android, iOS, Windows, Windows Phone) can be used for free, but have limitations.
Until the mobile app is unlocked (through an in-app purchase or a Plex Pass subscription), video and music streamed from a Plex Media Server has a 1 minute limit, and photos will be watermarked.

Plex is Server/Client relationship.
I doubt you’ll get much joy using it like a Player on your phone (just guessing - never tried it), but you’ll be able to access and have the Server serve files to your Plex app at home or away from home - and that’s what Plex is.

I get that, but with the new PlexAmp (I loved, loved, loved WinAmp) I’d like to be able to make that love connection. I carry about 20k tracks on my phone, another 50k on my server. A solid player is essential. Google Play ain’t bad, but can’t use my server as a source of media. Kodi is a terrible interface (even skinned), but gets me the full library. Hence my quandary.
Don’t know a thing about it (PlexAmp), but $5 ain’t the end of the world.
It’s kinda funny (not really), but the Plex App for Roku stands head and shoulders above ALL the other failures… and it’s the free one. Where’s the logic in that?
