What is PLEX Media Server doing with my CDs?

Server Version#: 1.18.2.2041-3d469cb32
Player Version#: 1.3.1.916-1cb2c34d

I am trying to place my 170 CD Mozart Complete Edition set into one PLEX Library. However, only 146 of the CDs appeared when I first tried to put them into my library. When I first discovered this issue I reviewed ALL of the input CDs and discovered that several CDs had multiple Disks identified with them. I assumed this was the error, and deleted the CDs. I thought that a rescan would recover and correct the problem. I have rescanned and emptied the trash. No luck.

I went back to the start of my project. FYI I ripped ALL 170 CDs using dBPoweramp. Below is a screen shot of my settings used to rip.

I next used ID3 Tag Editor to look at the first Track in the above screen shot. I used the Album naming convention of CD ### Description. The description is taken directly from the CD Cover Art. Here is the ID3 Tag Editor from that first Track.

For clarification I am adding here the Cover Art for this CD.

I ripped the CDs first and at that time dBPoweramp selected the Cover Art found above. I then went back and replaced the Cover Art dBPoweramp discovered with my scanned files. I have scanned all Cover Art and have Plex set to use Local Cover Art.

PLEX Media Server is on a Windows 10 PC and my Libraries are located on a QNAP NAS attached to a local net. I am able to connect to PLEX MS via web app.

This is very frustrating!!!

What is PLEX Media Server doing here and how do I correct it?

Thanks in advance,
Tom

I think the first major problem here is having the disc number in the Album title. Plex uses the album title (among other things) to match the album with the online databases to get things like album reviews, artist bio, etc. If the album title in the tag doesn’t match what’s online, it’s just going to cause this kind of headache.

You’ll have more success if you make the album name the same for all 170 discs. In Plex it will appear as a single, 170-disc set, like this:

I can see the advantage of having each disc as an album, especially with such a large set, but I don’t think the Plex system, in its current form, is going to accommodate that.

Thanks for your response. I see what you are saying. However, if I were to do as you are saying, I do not believe that I could search for i.e. Violins, Horns, Symphony 9, Dances, etc. Plex has done well with 146 out of 170 CDs.

It has "lumped"several CDs into one, similar to those depicted in your post…showing Disc 1, Disc 2, etc. Is there a way to extract those Discs as depicted in your post (Disc 1, Disc 2) and make separate albums from them?

Again thanks for your response.

Tom

There’s no way to do that as far as I know. In my experience, when I get away from tagging the way I described, everything becomes unpredictable. In fact, that’s what drove me to fix all my tags.

Maybe there’s a way to “hack” your metadata to make it work, but I haven’t discovered it.

As for searching for “Violins,” or “Horns,” etc., Plex will search album/track titles, genre, collection, style, and mood tags. You may have to work on adding those tags, but once done, you should be able to run all the searches you mentioned. The one limitation (and this is a big one that I’ve complained about) is that Plex’s Search feature only shows the first 30 matches in any category (30 tracks, 30 albums, 30 artists, etc.) You can also use the Custom Filter, which is actually more powerful than Search. You can create playlists from the Custom Filters, or Collections. That’s all predicated on putting in the work to add tags, if you haven’t already, but Plex can be pretty powerful once that’s all done.

there is a new PMS version which may or may not help with audio scanning. edit do note that is just released beta, for plex pass users. so you might have to wait a few days/weeks for general availability.
