I am finding freemake video transfer slow and locking up all the time, and handbrake does not seem to be easy to use with its designed format. I am willing to pay for it, but feel it should be bullet proof to pay for it.
I use HandBreak, the HighProfile preset, MKV file output, DTS, AC3 or MP3 audio. For my combination of MAC Mini (late 2012) server, Roku Plex client and home theatre hardware I find HandBreak very good.
Maybe describe what ‘best’ would be to you. Some like to access every possible setting while others are happy with simplicity even if the results are less than a personal ideal.
Also let us know your transfer computer OS, CPU & RAM. Plex client system specs.
I have an hp laptop with windows 8, intel core I7 2.2ghz 8 gig ram at 64 bit.
My goal is to end up with the same picture and sound quality as the original dvd to be found in the plex system from a nas hard drive system.
Thank you for your time in responding.

I use Ideal DVD Ripper on Dell Laptop running Intel core i5. It’s a great software that rips any DVD to the general video format like mkv, mpg, mp4, avi and wmv. No need to worry about the video bitrate, frame rate, aspect ratio and resolution as well, you can rip any of your DVD to any format you wanted and enjoy it on your smart phone, portable device with best quality.
I just started to reuse Handbrake. Finding it is best to be patient while it loads and not rush anything. Also using the que to put a full two episodes on at one time when putting a show broken down by seasons. It seems to be quicker than Freemake and is not locking up/not responding. Freemake video converter was mentioned over and over in web searches and it was frustrating me to no ends.
My laptop does not have a blue ray player, just dvd. Anyone having any luck with buying an external blue ray player and downloading blue rays?
Ripping your blu rays and ripping your dvd’s are two very different things. While the concept seems the same, the level of complexity goes up dramatically. It’s not just a bigger dvd, it’s a whole new paradigm with a different file structure and different means of constructing the final video/audio stream. So, while I’ve had luck putting my blu rays on Plex, I had to almost relearn everything I thought I knew.
Check out MakeMKV I usually start there with my blue-rays, it removes DRM,
and then move to handbrake for fine tuning. I convert all my MKV’s to MP4, don’t ask me why, it is probably an unnecessary step.
I ended up paying for ideal media solution and it can do most files. Been a time or two I have had to go back to handbrake, but handbrake takes too long and hangs up a lot. Ideal media solution allows you to load quickly and select and walk away. When doing a large library, and mine is only 700 movies so far, time becomes important. There has been a few times I have had to retry with Ideal media solutions and eventually it gets it or just locks up. Then time to go to handbrake and see if it can do it.
