What is the difference between Plex For Windows and Plex Media Player?

Hi, I’m pretty new to Plex, trying to understand the difference between (in the downloads) “Plex for Windows” and " Plex Media Player (for Windows Home Theater PCs)". I know about Windows Media Center, but can’t find much info about Windows Home Theater PCs. Is that a Microsoft thing?
I get the server, needed to record and store media, and the player, which requires Windows 10, I’m just not clear on the Home Theater download.
Thanks for shedding some light.

Windows Home Theater PC is a generic term describing a Windows PC hooked to a TV for media playback.

Subject to change at any time: Plex for Windows is the most up to date client intended to be controlled with keyboard and mouse and having all the current features (intro skip, commercial skip). Plex Media Player is the previous windows client that previously had a keyboard/mouse mode and a dedicated TV (10 ft UI) mode. This one performs the best but hasn’t been updated with many of the latest features like intro skip, commercial skip or Live TV grid guide while in the TV mode.

Use whichever one fills your need.

Does that mean the plex media player (for Windows Home Theater PCs) option still acts as a media server? or is it just for locally viewing content?

Plex Media Player has no built in server (from what I’m aware of it never had). You’ll need to install the Plex Media Server app to create a server — or connect to another server.
