What's the difference between Plex for Windows and Plex Media Player?

New here. What should I download? Also is Plex Media Server needed after I download any one of them?

Download both.

Decide which one you need - at the time you need it.

Plex Media Player is the HTPC app - is more powerful with more enhanced settings. TV View Mode is invaluable in an HTPC environment - or if you drag it to your TV occasionally - like I do.

Plex for Windows/Mac is a powerful player, but looks like Plexweb. It doesn’t have those enhanced settings and features. I use it on the Desktop when I don’t want to test Plex’s Transcoder with Plexweb.

Yes.

“Plexweb” is the bundled interface for your server.
You should use that to manage the server.

Plexweb should NOT be your default player - unless you want to see the Transcoder work. The Players will Direct Play almost everything. Plexweb will Direct Play almost nothing.
