What is the difference between the "Movies" and "Other Videos" media format?

I am wondering what the difference is between the “Movies” media format and the “Other Videos” media format?

Would a video clip work with either format?

Is there a difference in poster size? I find that some of my media use vertical/rectangular and others use horizontal/rectangular. I also note the poster size/configuration varies from platform to platform. The video posters on my iPad are different from the video posters on my Roku TV.

I would prefer to have vertical/rectangular posters for all videos and movies. Is that possible? If I were change certain videos from the “Other Videos” media format to the “Movies” media format, would that resolve my issue?

Please advise. Thank you.

Basically, movie libraries are for commercial films and PLEX downloads associated Metadata and posters etc. Other videos are for your own clips or home movies that might have local Metadata (like in an mp4), but PLEX does not search for or load Metadata from internet sources

Thank you. I do not want any internet sourced posters or information.

Are you aware of any differences in poster configuration?

Posters for personal videos are just a frame of the video and it is generated when the device gets the server update so the image can vary. The video aspect variance (landscape versus portrait) would cause the posters to change since some devices cannot handle landscape oriented posters (the image grab) so the app would try and crop the image, or add black bars to the image to make it the “right” size. I don’t know of a deliberate resizing occurring or where a related setting might be.

So, if I set up my videos (some are personal clips, some are downloaded YouTube videos, and some really are movies) as “Movies” instead of as “Other Videos”, would the posters be vertical/rectangular? Could I then set PLEX not to attempt to find 3rd party stuff, but use only my personal media?

Please advise. Thank you for your help.

I am wondering why it seems that “Movie” format media files always seem to be shown with vertical/rectangular posters, yet when I just now recreated some of my videos in “Movie” media format the personal posters I created still show up as horizontal/rectangular? Is there a technique or protocol to enable vertical/rectangular?

My vertical/rectangular posters look good. But while they do appear as vertical on my iPad, they seem always to be horizontal on my Roku TV and Roku Ultras. I would be great to have a user setting.

Plex can’t seem to standardize - this is how it looks on everything, but my Roku:

They can make promises - but they can’t keep them.

Do you think it likely that PLEX will standardize all the PLEX Players?

They made that promise already.

Results: Crickets.
